Kauhava [ ˈkɑu̯hɑvɑ ] is a city in Finland with 16,022 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018). It is located in the South Ostrobothnian landscape .
At the beginning of 2009, Kauhava was combined with the neighboring communities of Alahärmä , Ylihärmä and Kortesjärvi to form a new city, which also bears the name Kauhava. As a result, the population of Kauhava has more than doubled and the area almost tripled.
Geographical location
Kauhava is located in the north of South Ostrobothnia, right at the junction of State Road 19 and Main Road 63. There is a train station in Kauhava. Helsinki is 400 kilometers away, Vaasa 80 kilometers and Seinäjoki 40 kilometers. Neighboring municipalities are Lapua , Evijärvi , Isokyrö , Seinäjoki, Vöyri , Pedersöre , Uusikaarlepyy and Lappajärvi . Kauhava is located on the Lapuanjoki River .
economy
The knifemaking in Kauhava has a long tradition. Because of the knives made there, many Finns know the name of the place Kauhava. There used to be five different knife factories in Kauhava, but only one has survived to this day. A well-known knife made in Kauhava is the so-called puukko .
The engines of the economy in Kauhava are agriculture and agribusiness .
politics
As in most rural areas of Finland, the Center Party is the strongest party in Ylivieska . It has 21 of 43 members of the local council. The other two major parties in the country follow: the National Assembly Party has eleven and the Social Democrats six. The Christian Democrats with three and the right-wing populist basic fins with two seats are still represented in the municipal council .

Tradition and sights
Attractions
Kauhava is in an extremely flat area that can be admired from a lookout tower in Saarimaa. There are two museums in Kauhava: the Iisakin Jussin tupa Farm and Local History Museum and the Knife and Textile Museum, which is open in summer and where handicrafts are exhibited. This is located in the library building, which is also a cultural center. The Kauhava Church, built in 1925, is also worth a visit.

Every year in June, the International Knife Festival takes place in Kauhava. There the art of knife making is presented, there are knife exhibitions and knife throwing .
The pilots' midsummer festival, which was first celebrated in 1945, is unique in Finland . Airplane fans, friends of horse racing and rallies meet in Kauhava every year. The festival opens at Kalan Torppa, where the Finnish youth club movement originated. Then the first rallies take place and the next day horse races too. The whole thing is accompanied by the flight festival with sightseeing flights. The Air Force Academy ( Lentosotakoulu ) is also located in Kauhava .
