Kurikka [ kurikːɑ ] is a Finnish city in the landscape Southern Ostrobothnia .
The population is 20,952 (as of December 31, 2018). The city itself is located around 30 kilometers southwest of Seinäjoki , a rail hub in western Finland. The area of the city covers 1725 square kilometers, of which 20 square kilometers are water. The river Kyrönjoki flows through the urban area ; the center located at the intersection of the road Europastraße 12 / expressway 3 of Tampere to Vaasa and the main road 67 of Kristiinankaupunki to Seinajoki. The city's coat of arms shows a blue elk head against a white background over two white, crossed clubs ( Finnish : kurikka ) against a blue background.
history
The town of Kurikka has been documented since 1412. At that time, the elk hunter called Hirvi-Heikki moved to the area with extensive forests and a river landscape. By Finnish standards, the metal and wood industry settled in the city relatively early at the beginning of the 19th century . In 1868 the municipality became independent and in 1966 initially received market rights . Ten years later, in 1977, it was granted city rights. At the beginning of 2009 the neighboring municipality Jurva was incorporated.
On January 1, 2016, Jalasjärvi was incorporated into Kurikka.

economy
Today several larger companies are located in the area of the city, the largest employers being the construction company Velsa with over 300 and the furniture company Pohjanmaan Kaluste with over 100 employees . Nevertheless, the service sector is the largest economic sector at 52.1 percent , and 9.4 percent of the workforce is employed in agriculture .
politics
In the city council elections in autumn 2004, the 35 city council seats were awarded as follows: Center Party 17, National Assembly Party 8, Social Democrats 7, Christian Democrats 1, Left Alliance 1, True Finns 1. Kurikka City Director is Kimmo Jarva.
Attractions
Sights include the varied landscape in the area of the municipality with forests, river landscapes and an agricultural landscape. There are also two museums with the local history museum with its observation tower and the electricity works museum on Jyllinkoski . Every summer on the first weekend in June, the city holds a festival under the motto Find your partner .

Kurikka has twinned cities with Ockelbo in Sweden , Melhus in Norway and Holmegaard in Denmark .
