Kalevi Kivistö

Kalevi Johannes Kivistö (born March 25, 1941 in Kurikka ) is a Finnish left-wing politician, former member of parliament and two-time presidential candidate.

Kivistö was initially a member of the Democratic Union of the Finnish People (SKDL). From 1979 to 1985 he was SKDL chairman. Kivistö sat in the Finnish parliament from 1972 to 1984. From 1985 until the provincial administrative reform in 1997, he was governor of the province of Central Finland . He then worked in the Ministry of Education until 2004. Kivistö was represented as a minister in various cabinets. He was Finnish Minister of Culture from 1975 to 1976 and from 1977 to 1982, then Minister of Education in the Sorsa III cabinet for around ten months .

In the presidential elections in 1982 and 1988 he was put up as a candidate by the SKDL. In the elections, both times won by the Social Democrat Mauno Koivisto , he received 11.0% in an indirect election through electors in 1982, and 10.7% in the direct election in 1988.

After the dissolution of the SKDL around 1990, he became a member of the newly founded left-wing alliance .

Kivistö was also the chairman of the Red Cross in Finland from 1999 to 2008 . Kivistö has been married to Sirkka Tellervo Järvilehto since 1961. He has three children with her. In Jyväskylä is a park named after him.
