Alavus [ ˈɑlɑvus ] (Swedish Alavo ) is a city in western Finland .
In addition to the main town of Alavus, it includes Asema, Jokivarsi, Kaukola, Kontiainen, Kätkänjoki, Lapinkylä, Pollari, Rantatöysä, Sapsalampi, Seinäjärvi, Sulkava, Sydänmaa, Taipale, Vetämäjärvi, Timanttimaa, Kuivaskylää and Kattelusylää. The entire population is Finnish-speaking . Alavus became an independent municipality in 1865; In 1977 it received city rights .
In the past, Alavus was the center of the Finnish tar distillery . Today the city is settled by agriculture, forestry and the construction industry; In medium-sized companies, components made of wood and glass, such as doors, are mainly manufactured.
