The Codex Salmasianus is a Latin manuscript in uncial script that is now kept in Paris ( Codex Parisinus Latinus 10318 ). It was once in the possession of the French philologist Claude de Saumaise , Latinized Salmasius ( 1588 - 1653 ), who also wrote his name in it, which is where the name “Salmasianus” comes from. The previous fortunes of the manuscript are in the dark, as well as the origin and time of creation. While Ludwig Traube pleaded for Spain and the end of the 7th century on the basis of paleographic criteria, other palaeographers argued in favor of northern Italy or France at the end of the 8th century ( EA Lowe , B. Bischoff ), a position that has been confirmed more recently by the investigations Maddalena Spallones was attached to the Communis opinio.

The codex contains a collection of small Latin poetry from the 1st to 6th centuries, which was put together towards the end of the Vandal rule in North Africa ( 534 ) using earlier collections. Although the Codex was copied very incorrectly from an original in Capitalis by a half-educated copyist and is also mechanically damaged (the first 11 quaternions , which contained the first 5 books out of a total of 24), the collection of the Codex Salmasianus is the most important collection of Latin Small poetry and forms the basis of the modern collection of the Anthologia Latina .
