Markku Yli-Isotalo (born November 9, 1952 in Kuortane , † August 2, 2011 ) was a Finnish wrestler .

Career

Markku Yli-Isotalo began as a student in 1961 in his hometown when Ringer Club Kuortaneen Kunto with the rings . He was active in both styles, free style and Greco-Roman style. Markku Yli-Isotalo developed into a good wrestler, who was the best Finnish lightweight wrestler in both styles in the early 1970s after the resignation of world champion Eero Tapio . He held this position until the late 1970s.

During this period, Markku Yli-Isotalo won a total of eleven Finnish championship titles in the senior category, five in the Greco-Roman. Style and six in free style. He made his debut on the international wrestling mat in 1970 with a fifth place at the Junior European Championship (Juniors = up to the age of 18) in Huskvarna in Greco-Roman. Style in the class up to 60 kg body weight.

In the seniors he reached the 1974 Nordic Championships in Trelleborg in the lightweight (Greco-Roman style) behind the Swede Lars-Erik Skiöld the 2nd place. Lars-Erik Skiöld he became a real fear opponent of Markku Yli-Isotalo, against whom he lost several times.

The best best result at an international championship of Markku Yli-Isotalo was 4th place at the 1975 World Cup in Minsk in Greco-Roman. Lightweight style. At this world championship he also defeated the German champion Erich Klaus from Reilingen on points. At the only Olympic Games in which he participated, he finished in 1976 in Montreal in the lightweight, Greco-Roman. Style, 8th place. He defeated Lars-Erik Skiöld for the first time and blocked his way into the medal ranks. He suffered defeats from Manfred Schöndorfer from Bad Reichenhall and the Turkish Erol Mutlu .

At the end of 1979, Markku Yli-Isotalo ended his international wrestling career. His successor in Finland was the later world champion Tapio Sipilä .
