Heinz-Helmut Wehling (born September 8, 1950 in Bad Frankenhausen ) is a former German wrestler .

Career

Wehling trained with ASK Vorwärts Rostock until 1976 and from 1977 with ASK Vorwärts Frankfurt / Oder . The athlete fighting in the Greco-Roman style achieved the silver medal in the featherweight division at the 1972 Olympic Games after losing to the Bulgarian Georgi Markov in the final . Four years later, Wehling won a bronze medal in the lightweight at the 1976 Olympic Games .

In the featherweight division, Wehling was 4th at the 1970 World Championships and 6th in 1971. Then starting in the lightweight, he won bronze at the 1973 World Cup and silver in 1974. At the 1975 World Championships, Wehling was fifth. In 1977 he was world champion and in 1978 he was sixth.

Wehling became European featherweight champion in 1970. At the European Championships in 1974 he won bronze in the lightweight, in 1976 and 1979 Wehling took fourth and 1977 sixth place. In addition, Wehling was GDR champion in 1973–1975, 1977 and 1978, vice-champion in lightweight in 1979 and GDR champion in 1971 and 1972 and vice-champion in featherweight in 1970.

According to the sports historian Giselher Spitzer , Wehling was one of the first GDR athletes to be used for the first time in the context of the World Wrestling Championship in 1979.

Wehling worked in a daytime pain clinic in Trier . There he was responsible for physical fitness through Nordic walking and endurance training. He now runs a physiotherapy practice integrated into a fitness studio in Waghäusel ( Baden ). He has another practice in Rhineland-Palatinate.
