Janko Schopow (born August 9, 1954 in Kotel ) is a Bulgarian wrestler . He became world champion in Greco-Roman style welterweight in 1979 .
Career
Janko Schopow began wrestling as a teenager and, because of his talent, went through the support measures that were common there during communist times in Bulgaria . He was a student and started at a height of 1.71 meters in welterweight (class up to 74 kg body weight). He wrestled exclusively in the Greco-Roman style.
He made his first start in an international championship in 1974 at the European Junior Championship in Haparanda , Sweden , where he won ahead of the Soviet athlete Taimuraz Abchasawa and Victor Prentiu from Romania . In 1975 it was also at the start in Germany for the first time . He took second place at the Grand Prix of the Federal Republic in Aschaffenburg behind Gheorghe Ciobotaru from Romania and ahead of the two German wrestlers Karl-Heinz Helbing and Hans-Joachim Klötzing . In the same year he was also used at the World Championships in Minsk , where he faced the experienced Soviet athlete Anatoli Bykov , against whom he lost just on points and thus became vice world champion , in the welterweight division after five fights won in the final .
His first victory at an international championship came in 1976 at the European championship in Leningrad. He won there u. a. about such strong wrestlers as Petros Galaktopoulos, Greece, Gheorghe Ciobotaru and in the final battle against Josif Berishvili from the Soviet Union. With that he became European champion. It was then very disappointing for him that he only managed to win against the Hungarian Mihály Toma at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal and then had to retire after the third round after defeats against Vitezlav Macha from the CSSR and Karl-Heinz Helbing only finished 10th.
In 1977 Janko Schopow won two medals with 3rd place at the European Championships in Bursa and 2nd place at the World Championships in Gothenburg . In Bursa he was defeated by Gheorghe Ciobotaru, Vitezlav Macha and Klaus-Peter Göpfert from the GDR , in Gothenburg against Anatoli Bykow and Vitezlav Macha. In the fight against Ferenc Kocsis from Hungary , both wrestlers were disqualified for being passive.
In 1978 he won the bronze medal again at the European Championships in Oslo . He lost there only against Ferenc Kocsis (wrestler) | Ferenc Kocsis. At the World Cup in Mexico City, he only came in 5th place. His defeat against the Soviet starter Arif Niftulajew was decisive for this.
In 1979 he was only at the World Cup in San Diego at the start. He defeated there u. a. his old rivals Stanisław Krzesiński from Poland , Gheorghe Ciobotaru, Karl-Heinz Helbing and the Swedes Lennart Lundell . In the final battle he faced Ferenc Kocsis again . Both wrestlers, who knew each other very well from many tournaments and joint training camps, did not score in this fight and were then both disqualified for passivity. This result was enough for Kocsis to win the title, while Janko Schopow would have fallen back to the ungrateful 4th place. The Bulgarians protested against this interpretation of the regulations and were right. The jury could then make no other decision than to declare Janko Schopow world champion .
At the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow , where only a part of the world class was at the start because of the Olympic boycott of the western states, Janko Schopow again missed a medal, as in 1976. He defeated there u. a. his feared opponent Vítězslav Mácha , but lost to Ferenc Kocsis and Anatoli Bykow and ended up on the ungrateful 4th place.
After these Olympic Games Janko Schopow started at the World Championships in Oslo in 1981 and at the European Championships in Varna in 1982 . At both events, however, he no longer achieved the shape of the years 1975 to 1980 and landed in 6th place each time.
