Romania thus defended first place in the Greco-Roman style before the Soviet Union. The GDR came in eighth, the FRG in tenth place through the fifth place of Erich Klaus in the class up to 68 kg.

The Soviet Union, which won six gold medals in Bursa in 1977, lost first place in freestyle wrestling to the Bulgarian hosts. Wrestlers from twelve nations were able to place in the top six.
