Petre Dicu

Petre Dicu (born May 27, 1954 in Gostavățu , Olt County ) is a former Romanian wrestler . He was winner of the bronze medal at the 1980 Olympic Games in Greco-Roman wrestling in heavyweight .

Career

Petre Dicu began wrestling as a teenager at the sports club in Drobeta Turnu Severin . After initial successes at national level, he was delegated to the Dinamo Bucharest sports club due to his talent . His main trainer was Tudor Gaita. He concentrated fully on the Greco-Roman style and, as an adult, was 1.84 meters tall and always wrestled in the light heavyweight division, the weight class that in his day reached up to 90 kg body weight.

He first appeared on the international wrestling stage in 1974 at the European Junior Championships (Espoirs) in Haparanda, Sweden . He finished there in 6th place in the light heavyweight division.

In 1976, as the successor to Nicolae Neguț, he was the first Romanian champion in the senior light heavyweight division and also started at the European Championships that year in Leningrad . He came there after victories over Giuseppe Vitucci from Italy and Istvan Sellyei from Hungary and defeats against Ants Nisu from the Soviet Union and Roman Wrocławski from Poland on the 5th place. At the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal , it has not yet been used.

In 1977 Petre Dicu landed at the European Championships in Bursa after defeats against Olympic champion Csaba Hegedűs from Hungary and Frank Andersson from Sweden in 9th place. At the 1977 World Cup in Gothenburg , however, he scored his first major success with the seniors. He defeated there u. a. the strong wrestlers Wiktor Avdessjew from the Soviet Union, Czesław Kwieciński from Poland and Stojan Nikolow from Bulgaria . He only lost in the final fight against local heroes Frank Andersson and became vice world champion .

He also won a medal at the European Championship in Oslo in 1978 , the bronze one. He even managed to beat the multiple Soviet world champion Igor Kanygin . He suffered defeats against Frank Andersson and the Finn Keijo Manni . At this year's World Cup in Mexico City , he was not quite as successful, although there he also managed to win over an Olympic champion , Csaba Hegedűs from Hungary. After a defeat against Czesław Kwieciński, whom he had beaten several times before, he had to retire early and came in 5th place.

In 1979 Petre Dicu again won a bronze medal at the European Championships in Bucharest . He get there u. a. Victories over Ivan Petrow from Bulgaria, Airapet Minassjan from the USSR and Norbert Növényi from Hungary. He suffered defeats from Georgios Posidis from Greece and Frank Andersson. At the 1979 World Cup in San Diego he won again against Norbert Növényi, but surprisingly lost to Yoshihiro Fujita from Japan and Pedro Pawlidis from West Germany and only achieved 9th place.

At the 1980 European Championships in Prievidza , Petre Dicu won over Stojan Nikolow and Keijo Manni . In the fight against Igor Kanygin there were no scores, so both wrestlers were put off the mat prematurely because of passivity. With that he was burdened with 4 missing points. The subsequent defeat against Frank Andersson therefore brought his elimination and slip to 4th place. At the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow, Petre Dicu only met tough opponents, but against whom he fought brilliantly. First he defeated the strong Austrian Franz Pitschmann , then he achieved another sensational point success over Igor Kanygin . In the following fights he also defeated Stojan Nikolow, Thomas Horschel from the GDR and, for the first time in his career, Frank Andersson. Ironically against Norbert Növenyi, the Hungarian surprise man of these games, whom he had already defeated several times before, he lost in Moscow and came in third place behind him and Igor Kanygin, which earned him the Olympic bronze medal .

In 1981 Petre Dicu started at the European Championships in Gothenburg . But he only got one victory over Pal Berger from Norway . Against Alexander Dubrowski from the USSR and Georgios Posidis he lost and came in 9th place.

Petre Dicu also started frequently in the Federal Republic of Germany during his career . Between 1976 and 1980 he took part in the Grand Prix of the FRG in Aschaffenburg five times . The best place he achieved was a 2nd place in 1980, when he was behind the Soviet athlete Sergei Golubowitsch , but ahead of Czesław Kwieciński and Gennadi Korban from the USSR.

After the European Championship in 1981, Petre Dicu devoted himself more to his studies in economics. His successor in Romania was already ready in Ilie Matei .

In Romania, Petre Dicu received the title customary in the socialist states of the time for his services: "Honored Master of Sport".
