Stoyan Nikolov
Stojan Nikolow Ivanov (born April 2, 1949 ) is a former Bulgarian wrestler . He was world champion in 1978 and winner of an Olympic silver medal in the Greco-Roman style in the light heavyweight division in 1976 .
Career
The full name of this athlete is Stoyan Nikolov Ivanov . In most of the winners' lists he appears as Stojan Nikolow , only occasionally as Stojan Ivanov and never under his full name. For the sake of clarity, he is therefore only called Stojan Nikolow .
He began his wrestling career, in which he fully concentrated on the Greco-Roman style, as a teenager. Details of his origins, club and coaches are not known. As an adult he belonged to the sports organization "Dynamo", so it can be assumed that he was a member of a state security body.
He began his career on the international wrestling mat in 1970 with a 5th place at the European championship in Berlin (East) in the light heavyweight division. He won there u. a. also about the German starter Günter Kowalewski from Witten.
In 1971 it celebrated its first great success. He was runner- up in the light heavyweight division in Sofia . He defeated six opponents, u. a. also the 1968 Olympic champion Lothar Metz from Rostock . In the final battle he lost to the Soviet athlete Valery Resanzew , who became one of his main competitors in the following years.
Also the Olympic year 1972 started Stojan Nikiolow very successfully, because he became European light heavyweight champion in Katowice . He defeated u. a. Dieter Heuer from the GDR , Darko Nišavić from Yugoslavia , Czesław Kwieciński from Poland and the Soviet athlete Omar Bliadse , who started for Resanzew . His start at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich was all the more disappointing . He lost there against Czesław Kwieciński, whom he had defeated in Katowice and, surprisingly, against the Hungarian Jozsef Percsi , who was previously completely unknown on the international wrestling mat , with which he was eliminated and ended up in 11th place.
Stojan Nikolow found his way back to success as early as 1973. At the European Championships in Helsinki he successfully took revenge on Jozsef Percsi for his defeat in Munich. In the final battle, however, he was defeated by Valery Resanzew and became vice- European champion . He also won a medal at the 1973 World Cup in Tehran . Here he defeated u. a. the two German starters Dieter Heuer and Fred Theobald , but lost in the final bouts against Czesław Kwieciński and again against Valeri Resanzew. He won an EM bronze medal with it .
In 1975 Stojan Nikolow started only at the World Championships in Minsk . He won there over his first five opponents and lost again in the final battle against Valery Resanzew, against whom he simply could not win. He became vice world champion .
At the European Championships in Leningrad in 1976 he won a. a. again over Dieter Heuer and Fred Theobald, also defeated the strong Wladislav Bojko from the CSSR and Darko Nišavić and was defeated by the Resanzew representative Ants Nisu from the USSR and against Frank Andersson from Sweden , in whom a new dangerous rival in the light heavyweight division had grown up . At the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal , however, he was able to defeat Frank Andersson and thus laid the foundation for winning the Olympic silver medal , because in the fight for the gold medal he again had no chance against Valery Resanzew.
Stoyan Nikolov continued his career for another four years after Montreal. At the European Championships in 1977 in Bursa , he even managed to beat the 1972 Olympic champion Csaba Hegedűs from Hungary. He then lost to Frank Andersson and, surprisingly, also to Herbert Götze from the GDR, with which he only reached 7th place. At the 1977 World Championships in Gothenburg he successfully took revenge on Herbert Götze, defeated a. a. also Czesław Kwieciński and again Csaba Hegedűs, but lost to Petre Dicu from Romania and Frank Andersson and came in 3rd place.
In 1978 Stoyan Nikolov achieved the greatest success of his career. He became world light heavyweight champion in Mexico City . He defeated the Soviet athlete Viktor Avdessjew , Valeri Resanzew resigned after his Olympic victory in 1976, Pedro Pawlidis from Germany , Jose Poll from Cuba and Darko Nišavić. In the final he faced his long-time rival Frank Andersson. He could not defeat him this time either, but after both wrestlers were taken off the mat for "passivity", he was world champion because he was better than Frank Andersson after failure points.
In 1979 Stojan Nikolow paused at the international championships. At the 1980 European Championships in Prievidza , he won a light heavyweight medal again, the bronze one. In this championship he defeated u. a. the strong Keijo Manni from Finland and Czesław Kwieciński. He lost against the new Soviet star wrestler Igor Kanygin , against Petre Dicu and against Frank Andersson. At the end of his career he took part in the Olympic Games in Moscow for the third time. He came there in the light heavyweight division only to one victory over Darko Nišavić. He had to admit defeat against Igor Kanygin and Petre Dicu. He came in 8th place in the final accounts.
