Nicolae Neguț

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nicolae Neguț (born October 17, 1945 in Bucharest ) is a former Romanian wrestler . He was an Olympian in 1968 and 1972 and third in the 1969 World Cup in Greco-Roman style in middle and light heavyweight.

Career

Nicolae Neguț started wrestling at the Progresul sports club in his hometown of Bucharest . As a junior he entered the Romanian army and became a member of the army sports club Steaua Bucharest . He was trained there by I. Martac. The strong, 1.85 meter tall athlete first competed in the middleweight division and after a weight class reform by the international wrestling association (FILA) in 1969 in the light heavyweight division. He concentrated fully on the Greco-Roman style.

In 1968 Nicolae Neguț became the first Romanian middleweight champion, replacing Gheorghe Popovici , who had dominated this weight class in Romania for over a decade. He made his debut on the international wrestling mat in 1966 with a 4th place in the middleweight division at the Balkan Games in Ljubljana . In 1967 he lost in an international match in Bucharest against Ernst Knoll from the Federal Republic of Germany on points.

In 1968 he took a good 5th place at the European Middleweight Championship in Västerås . He didn't lose a single one of five fights, but drew against Lothar Metz from the GDR , Jiří Kormaník from the CSSR and Hakan Överby from Norway and was therefore eliminated after the 5th round due to too many missing points before the final.

In the same year he also started at the Olympic Games in Mexico City . There he defeated Ernst Knoll and Petar Krumow from Bulgaria and parted with Tevfik Kış from Turkey in a draw. He lost on points against Lothar Metz, who was Olympic champion at this championship , and against the 1960 Olympic champion Branislav Simić from Yugoslavia and thus just missed a medal with 4th place.

Nicolae Neguț was unable to take part in the 1969 European Championship in Modena because the teams from the socialist countries did not compete there because the host country, Italy, refused to fly the flag of the GDR . But he was at the 1969 World Cup in Mar del Plata and won the bronze medal in the light heavyweight division with three wins and losses against Alexander Jurkewitsch from the USSR and Venko Zinzarow from Bulgaria.

In the following years he won no more medals at world and European championships and the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich . However, he reached at the World Championships in 1971 in Sofia and 1973 in Tehran again excellent 4th places. He failed only because of great talent like Valeri Resanzew and Omar Bliadse from the USSR, Czesław Kwieciński from Poland and Stojan Nikolow from Bulgaria, where he achieved a sensational draw at the Olympic Games in Munich against the then outstanding wrestler Valeri Resanzew in this weight class .

In 1971 he won three times against Kaspar Eham from Bad Reichenhall on an international campaign trip to Romania by the German national relay team . On the return visit of the Romanian national relay in the FRG in 1972 he was defeated by Ernst Knoll on points, triumphed over Max Mitterbichler from Traunstein and was put off the mat together with Günter Kowalewski from Witten because of "passivity".

From 1976 Nicolae Neguț only took part in national wrestling events.
