Alexander Michailowitsch Jurkewitsch ( Russian Александр Михайлович Юркевич ; born May 22, 1942 , † June 25, 2011 in Moscow ) was a Soviet wrestler . He was world champion in 1969 in the Greco-Roman style light heavyweight.

Career

Alexander Yurkevich began wrestling as a teenager. He joined the Red Army and received extensive support there. He concentrated fully on the Greco-Roman style. In his time, the competition in the Soviet Union, which at least in the Greco-Roman style was the number one wrestling nation in the world, was particularly great. He therefore had to wait a relatively long time before he came to use in international championships, although he had been one of the best Soviet wrestlers in his weight class since 1965. The wrestlers against whom he had to prevail in the USSR were all world-class people like Rimantas Bagdonas , Valentin Olenik , Valeri Resanzew , Anatoli Kirow , Omar Bliadze or Nikolai Ivanovich Jakowenko .

After some successes at important national events such as the renowned "Iwan-Poddubny" tournament in Moscow , Alexander Jurkewitsch was then used at the 1967 European Championships in Minsk . He showed his great ability there in the middleweight division and became European champion with victories over Jean-Marie Chardonnes from Switzerland , Merlid Öyvid from Norway , a bye and a draw against Lothar Metz from the GDR .

Alexander Jurkewitsch missed the jump to the Olympic Games in 1968, however, because he, meanwhile switched to the light heavyweight division, could not prevail against Nikolai Ivanovich Jakowenko in the Soviet Union . But he was used again in 1969 at the World Cup in Mar del Plata . In the light heavyweight division he defeated Ragnar Gundersen from Norway, Burke Deadrich from the United States, Hiroyoshi Fujigawa from Japan , Nicolae Neguț from Romania and Wenko Zinzarow from Bulgaria and became world champion .

Alexander Jurkewitsch was active for a few years afterwards, but did not get any further appearances at the international championships.
