Czesław Kwieciński

Czesław Kwieciński (born January 20, 1943 in Romaškiai , Kaunas Rajongemeinde , Lithuanian SSR ) is a former Polish wrestler . He won a bronze medal in Greco-Roman at the Olympic Games in 1972 and 1976 . Light heavyweight style.

Career

Czesław Kwieciński was deported to Siberia with his parents in 1948 by the Soviet secret service NKVD . There he grew up and began wrestling as a teenager. He did not return to Poland until the age of 16 and settled in Piotrcovil. There he continued the wrestling and was trained by Eugeniusz Kierusz. In 1962 he moved to the Siła Mysłowice sports club , to which he belonged until the end of his career. During his long career, the coaches he worked with changed several times. There were u. a. Ernest Gondzik, Jan Stawowski and Janusz Tracewski.

In 1964 Czesław Kwieciński was used as a Polish junior champion in the Greco-Roman style in the middleweight (then up to 87 kg body weight) at the Olympic Games in Tokyo . There he reached 16th place in the middleweight division. However, in Vyacheslav Oleinik from the USSR and Lothar Metz from Rostock, he had enormously tough opponents, against whom, not surprisingly, he lost.

Already in the next year Czesław Kwieciński surprised at the world championships in Tampere, Finland by winning the world championship bronze medal , which he secured with a victory over the Yugoslav Josip Čorak . He suffered defeats against Per Svensson from Sweden and Ferenc Kiss from Hungary .

In the next three years he reached no medals at the World or European Championships and also at the Olympic Games in Mexico City in 1968 . In Mexico City he came in 7th place in the light heavyweight division. In 1969 he did not compete in any international championships. 1970 then followed after a 6th place at the European championship in Berlin with the 2nd place in the light heavyweight division at the world championship in Edmonton, Canada, the next big success in the career of Czesław Kwieciński. He won Edmonton a. a. about the strong Eastern Bloc wrestlers Venko Tsintsarow from Bulgaria , László Sillai from Hungary and Josip Čorak. In the final battle he was defeated by the outstanding Soviet athlete Valery Resanzew in this weight class and style .

In 1972 Czesław Kwieciński took part in his third Olympic Games in Munich . For the first time he won an Olympic medal with the bronze medal. His victories over Stojan Nikolow from Bulgaria and the draw against Josip Čorak and Lothar Metz were remarkable . Against Valery Resanzew he had no chance.

In 1973 he had another great success. In Tehran , like in 1970, he was vice world champion in the light heavyweight division. After victories over Stojan Nikolow, Károly Bajkó from Hungary and Nicolae Neguț from Romania, he lost again in the final against Valeri Resanzew.

Until 1976 he won no more medals. At least he came in 4th place at the European Championships in 1974 and 1975. At the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal , however, he secured a bronze medal for the second time . Stoyan Nikolov and Valery Resanzew placed in front of him.

Czesław Kwieciński was a figure of energy and ambition, which was evident in the following four years, during which he continued to compete at many World and European Championships. In the meantime he met a whole new generation of world-class wrestlers, for whom he mostly had great fights, but had to acknowledge that the youth won the supremacy. These young wrestlers were mainly Frank Andersson from Sweden , Igor Kanygin from the Soviet Union and Norbert Növényi from Hungary.

In 1978 he succeeded at the European Championships in Oslo , where he finished 6th, a prestigious victory over the 1972 Olympic middleweight champion Csaba Hegedüs from Hungary, and in the same year he achieved another excellent fourth at the World Championships in Mexico City Space.

In 1980 he started in Moscow for the fifth time at the Olympic Games. He had the bad luck there, however, that after a win in the first round over the Mongols Jamysing Bor he met Frank Andersson and Igor Kanygin, to whom he lost, was eliminated and only finished 11th in the final score.

Then Czesław Kwieciński, now 37 years old, resigned from international wrestling. In the next few years he worked as a sports teacher in Mysłowice and was honored by the city with the award of honorary citizenship on the occasion of his 65th birthday.
