Bojan Alexandrow Radew ( Bulgarian Боян Радев ; born February 25, 1942 in Moschino , Pernik Oblast ) is a former Bulgarian wrestler and art patron .

Career

Bojan Radew was discovered in school sport as a teenager, when talent scouts from the Bulgarian Wrestling Association became aware of his strength and pronounced sense of movement. At the age of 20, the 1.76 m tall athlete weighed around 97 kg and was ready for international assignments. At that time he was a member of Levski Spartak Sofia , his coach was Slav Slavov. He wrestled exclusively in the Greco-Roman style. As a member of the army, he was released from normal service and was able to devote himself fully to wrestling.

At the first world championship in which he took part, he took an excellent second place in the heavyweight division in Toledo / USA . Only the Georgian veteran Rostom Abashidze prevented Bojan's victory with a draw and a slightly better point ratio from the preliminary fights.

1963 did not go that well, because the Swede Per Svensson defeated him. So Bojan Radew had to make do with fifth place.

1964 and 1968 were his big years. He became Olympic champion in both years . 1964 in Tokyo and 1968 in Mexico City . Particularly noteworthy was the fact that in 1968 he won ahead of Nikolai Jakovenko , the Soviet master wrestler.

In 1965 he came because of two draws against Ferenc Kiss from Hungary and Valeri Anissimow from the USSR again only in fifth place.

In 1966 and 1967 he achieved excellent results again. In 1966 he became world champion, this time two draws in the decisive fights against Anissimow and Nicolae Martinescu from Romania , to win the title. In 1967, however, he failed to Martinescu and Jakowenko and became vice world champion.

After his career as an active wrestler, Bojan Radew became a coach. In September 2009 he was inducted into the FILA International Wrestling Hall of Fame for his services to wrestling .
