Karl-Erik Nilsson (born January 4, 1922 in Stehag , Eslöv , † December 14, 2017 ) was a Swedish wrestler . He was Olympic champion in London in 1948 .

Career

Karl-Erik Nilsson started wrestling as a teenager in Malmö . As a member of the wrestling club GAK "Enighet" Malmö, he developed into an expert in the Greco-Roman style. As a member of the born 1922, he had to wait until 1948 because of the Second World War until he came to an international championship, the Olympic Games in London . Excellent prepared by the coaches Robert Oksa and Rudolf Svedberg , he managed to win the gold medal in the Greco-Roman style in the light heavyweight division with six wins .

In 1949 Karl-Erik Nilsson stayed with his club on a competition trip in Germany . The German athletes had been outlawed internationally since the end of the war and were not allowed to participate in any international championships. The Swedish wrestlers from Malmö around Karl-Erik Nilsson were therefore to be credited with being among the first foreign athletes to shake hands with the German wrestlers for reconciliation and for sporting competition. During this trip Nilsson met the German champion Max Leichter from Eckenheim three times and won all three encounters.

In 1950, after a 28-year break, the Greco-Roman style world championships were held in Stockholm for the first time. Nilsson started as the favorite in the light heavyweight division, but disappointed, because he lost after three wins against the Hungarian Gyula Kovács and only came in 4th place.

In the second participation in the Olympic Games in Helsinki in 1952 , Nilsson won the bronze medal with three wins and two losses. He was defeated by Schalwa Tschikladse from the Soviet Union and Kelpo Grondahl from Finland , who also became Olympic champion .

At the 1953 World Cup in Naples , Nilsson first got two light heavyweight victories over difficult opponents, namely Adelmo Bulgarelli from Italy and August Englas , the Soviet champion from Estonia . In his third fight he was defeated by his old rival Kelpo Grondahl and was eliminated and only came in 7th place. August Englas won the world title ahead of Kelpo Grondahl.

Nilsson won a medal again at the 1955 World Cup in Greco-Roman style in Karlsruhe . He had to contest seven fights, of which he won five. He suffered defeats against Veikko Lahti from Finland and Valentin Nikolajew from the Soviet Union.

At the end of his successful career, Nilsson finally won another bronze medal at the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne . He took revenge on Veikko Lahti for his defeat in Karlsruhe and was only defeated by Petko Sirakow from Bulgaria and Valentin Nikolajew.
