Muharrem Candaş

Muharrem Candaş (* 1921 in Smyrna, today Izmir , † October 19, 2009 ibid) was a Turkish wrestler .

Candaş grew up in Smyrna / Izmir and started wrestling there as a teenager. Already at the beginning of the 1940s he belonged to the Turkish elite of wrestlers. He wrestled in both the free style and the Greco-Roman style. In 1946 he was used by the Turkish Wrestling Association at the first international championship held after the Second World War , the European Championship in Stockholm , and immediately won a medal. With a body weight of almost 90 kg, he usually wrestled in the light heavyweight division, but since this weight class was extremely strong in Turkey, he was used at the European heavyweight championship in 1949 and won the silver medal. His greatest achievement was winning the 1950 world title in Stockholm in the light heavyweight, Greco-Roman style .

After this victory, Candaş ended his international wrestling career and lived as a businessman in Izmir.
