Gyula Bóbis

Gyula Bóbis (born October 7, 1909 in Kecskemét , † January 24, 1972 in Budapest ) was a Hungarian wrestler . He was Olympic champion in London in 1948 .

Career

Gyula Bóbis grew up in Kecskemét and started there in 1919 at the sports club Kecskeméti TE with the wrestling . In the course of time he developed into an outstanding semi-heavyweight or heavyweight, who mastered both styles, Greco-Roman and freestyle wrestling , excellently. In 1934 he was the first Hungarian light heavyweight champion in the Greco-Roman style.

Gyula made his first appearance at an international championship at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin in the Greco-Roman style in the light heavyweight division. He was already 27 years old and still had to learn the hard way, because he lost both fights he played and ended up in 10th place. Also at the European Championships in Paris in 1937 in the Greco-Roman style, Gyula, this time wrestling in the heavyweight division, lost his two fights and only came 8th out of 9 participants. At the European championship of the same year in Munich in free style, he landed his first success at an international championship with third place and winning the bronze medal.

Gyula also won a bronze medal at the European Championships in Oslo in 1939 , after the Hungarian team did not start at the European Championships in Tallinn in 1938 . In Oslo he managed to win a points over the 1938 European champion Johannes Kotkas from Estonia . But since he was subsequently defeated against John Nyman from Sweden and against Mehmet Çoban from Turkey , Kotkas was still European champion.

After this championship, Gyula, like all wrestlers in Europe, had a break of 7 years until he could start again in an international championship. He was back in 1946 at the first international championship after World War II in Stockholm and came in 4th place in the light heavyweight division in free style.

At the Olympic Games in London in 1948 , Gyula celebrated the greatest success of his career at the age of 39. With four victories he won the gold medal and also defeated the Swedish favorite Bertil Antonsson .

After that, Gyula did not retire at all, but started two years later at the World Cup in Stockholm in 1950 and became vice world champion there. In the "Den of the Lion" he suffered a point defeat from Bertil Antonsson.
