Kyle Snyder (born November 20, 1995 in Maryland , USA ) is an American wrestler . He was world champion in 2015 and 2017 and Olympic champion in free style in light heavyweight in 2016 .
Career
Kyle Snyder began wrestling as a teenager in high school and was also involved in American football . Very soon his extraordinary talent for wrestling became apparent, so he concentrated on this sport. He only wrestles in free style. In the last three years of high school, Kyle Snyder won 179 fights without being beaten. Kyle Snyder lives in Woodbine, Maryland and is a member of the Titan Mercury WC (wrestling club).
In 2012 he finished 3rd in the US Junior Light Heavyweight Championship. That was his first medal win at an important championship.
In 2013, he became the US Junior Champion and also won the US selection tournament for the Junior World Light Heavyweight Championship. At the Junior World Championships, which took place in Sofia, he was just under 18-year-old light heavyweight winner before Viktor Kazischwili, Georgia, Yusup Malachmagomedow, Russia and Satywort Kadian, India. After this success, Kyle Snyder was accepted into the US national wrestling team and has since trained mainly at the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, where he also became a member of the Sunkist Kids WC. His trainers there are Bill Zadick and Zeke Jones .
In 2014 Kyle Snyder was again American junior light heavyweight champion and qualified again for participation in the Junior World Championship, which took place in Zagreb. Although he was unable to defend his 2013 title there, he finished third behind Georgi Gogajew, Russia and Yusuf Can Zeybek from Turkey. He was the first American wrestler to win two medals in a Junior World Championship.
In March 2015, Kyle Snyder finished at the NCAA Championships (US student championship), starting for Ohio State University, in the light heavyweight division behind Kyven Gadson, 2nd place. After that it went "in rapid succession" and Kyle Snyder booked one success after another. He was first American light heavyweight champion, defeating the 2012 Olympic champion Jake Varner in the final. Then he qualified at the US trials with two wins over Jake Varner for participation in the world championship. Before the World Cup, he won the Pan American Games in Toronto, ahead of Arjun Gill, Canada, Jose Diaz, Venezuela and Jesse Ruiz, Mexico.
The greatest success so far in his young career was achieved in September 2015 at the World Championships in Las Vegas. He defeated there in the light heavyweight Pawlo Oleinik , Ukraine, Radoslaw Baran, Poland, Jose Diaz, Abbas Tahan , Iran and in the final battle also the high favorite Abdussalam Gadissow from Russia. In the fight against Gadissow he led against Snyder with 4: 3 points until 23 seconds before the end. Kyle Snyder then managed a two-way ranking and was now leading 5: 4. Abdussalam Gadissow was then only able to achieve a single rating until the end of the fight, so that Kyle Snyder was the new world champion with a score of 5: 5 due to the higher final score (2: 1). At the age of 19, he is the youngest American wrestler to ever become world champion.
In January 2016, Kyle Snyder started at the "Ivan Yarigin" Grand Prix in Krasnoyarsk. He lost there in the semifinals against Ansor Boltukayev from Russia on points (0: 3). But he secured a bronze medal with a clear win over Zainula Kurbanow from Russia (8: 2). Olympic champion Jake Varner , who lost to Ansor Boltukayev in the final , also started at this tournament . In the US Olympic elimination, he won ahead of Jake Varner.
At the Olympic tournament in Rio de Janeiro on August 21, 2016, he finally won the gold medal with victories over Javier Cortina Lacerre, Cuba, the Russian Albert Saritow , who started for Romania , Elisbar Odikadze from Georgia and in the final over the veteran Chetag Gasjumow from Azerbaijan. At the age of 20 he was one of the youngest Olympic champions in wrestling.
In 2017 Kyle Snyder was again world champion in the weight class up to 97 kg in Paris. In the final, he defeated the other young star, the Russian Abdulraschid Sadulajew , the 2016 Olympic champion in the weight class up to 86 kg body weight, who had moved up into his weight class, just by points.
At the 2018 World Cup in Budapest, Kyle Snyder was surprised in the final by Abdulraschid Sadulajew and shouldered after 1.15 minutes. So he had to be satisfied with the silver medal.
In April 2019 Kyle Snyder became Pan-American Champion in Buenos Aires and in August 2019 in Lima he was also the winner of the Pan-American Games in Lima, each in the weight class up to 97 kg body weight. At the 2019 World Cup in Nur-Sultan, Kyle Snyder won over Mausam Chatri, India and Magomed Ibragimow, Uzbekistan, but then lost somewhat surprisingly to Sharif Sharifov, but secured a bronze medal with a victory over Elisbar Odikadze from Georgia. A duel with Abdulraschid Sadulajew, who won the final battle over Sharif Sharifov, did not occur at this world championship.
In January 2020 Kyle Snyder lost to Mohammad Hossein Askari Mohammadian from Iran at the "Matteio-Pellicone" ranking tournament in Rome and finished only one of the third places. At the Pan American Championship in March 2020, however, he won the title with superior victories over Luis Miguel Peres Sosa, Dominican Republic, Evan Amador Ramos, Puerto Rico, Jose Daniel Diaz Robertti, Venezuela and Reineris Salas Perez, Cuba.
