Reza Yazdani (born August 25, 1984 in Juybar , Mazandaran Province ) is an Iranian wrestler . He became world light heavyweight champion in free style in 2011 and 2013 .
Career
Reza Mohammad Ali Yazdani began wrestling as a teenager in 1995. He concentrated on the free style. He is a member of the Reja Kohikhil sports club and has been coached by M. Esmaelpour since 1996. With a height of 1.75 meters, he is a relatively small wrestler for his weight class, who is endowed with irrepressible strength.
In 2004 Reza Yazdani won his first medal at an international championship. He came at the Asian Junior Championship in Alma-Ata in the welterweight to 3rd place. In 2006 he took part for the first time in an international senior championship, the world championship in Guangzhou . He started there in the middleweight division . After a victory over the South African Coenraad de Villiers, he lost there in his second fight against the multiple world champion Saschid Saschidow from Russia , but then won in the consolation round with victories over Travis Cross , Canada , Radoslaw Horbik , Poland and Taras Danko , Ukraine a world championship bronze medal . In December of the same year he then won the Asian Games in Doha in the middleweight division in front of Sajurbek Sochijew from Uzbekistan .
In 2007 Reza Yazdani fought for a world championship bronze medal again at the world championship in Baku in the middleweight division. He won over Vadim Lalijew , Armenia , Naurus Srapilewitsch Temresow , Azerbaijan , Roylandy Zuniga Herrera , Cuba and Travis Cross. In the semi-finals he was defeated by Georgi Ketojew from Russia and in the battle for the bronze medal he defeated Joe E. Williams from the United States .
At the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008 Reza Yazdani disappointed, because he lost after winning a fight against Naurus Srapilewitsch Temresow. Since this did not reach the final, he was eliminated and only came in 11th place.
In 2009 and 2010 he was not used at the World Cup. In 2010 he switched from middle to light heavyweight. In this he won the Asian Championships in New Delhi in May and the Asian Games in Guangzhou in November.
Reza Yazdani celebrated the greatest success of his career so far at the World Cup in Istanbul . He defeated there in the light heavyweight Eder Villanueva Gonzalez from Spain , Gergely Kiss from Hungary , Ruslan Scheikow from Belarus and Sinivie Boltic from Nigeria . In the final, he practically faced the Turkish hope Serhat Balci in the lion's den . He managed to defeat this wrestler with 2: 1 rounds (4: 0, 0: 1, 1: 0 points) and become world champion.
Reza Yazdani also competed in the 2012 Olympic Games in London. There he defeated Abdussalam Gadissow , Russia and Magomed Musajew, Kyrgyzstan, but then suffered a knee injury in the fight against Valeri Andriizew and lost. Since this reached the final, he was able to continue wrestling in the consolation round, but in which he lost to Chetag Gasjumow and therefore only finished 5th.
After the disappointment in London, Reza Yazdani was again in excellent shape at the 2013 World Cup in Budapest and won his second world title with victories over Iwan Jankowski, Belarus, Manjot Sandhu, Canada, Dato Kerashvili, Georgia, Pavlo Oleinik , Ukraine and Chetag Gasjumow.
In March 2014, Reza Yazdani represented his country at the Team World Cup in Los Angeles, which Iran also won. He came to victories in the new weight class up to 97 kg over JD Bergman from the United States, Viktor Kasischwili from Armenia and Juri Belonowski from Russia. At the 2014 World Cup in Tashkent, he was unable to defend his world title. He came in Tashkent to victories over Sumit Sumit from India and Magomed Musajew, Kyrgyzstan, but lost in the quarterfinals to the Turkish newcomer Samil Erdogan clearly on points. Since this did not reach the final, he had to retire and only came in 9th place. A small consolation for him was the victory at the Asian Games in 2014 in Inchenon / South Korea. There he defeated Dorjchandyn Chuderbulga , Mongolia, Zoon Chanuk, South Korea and Magomed Musayev, Kyrgyzstan.
In 2015, Reza Yazdani also competed in the Team World Cup in Los Angeles in the weight class up to 97 kg. He fought two fights there: he won against Ivan Jankowski from Belarus and he was defeated against Sharif Sharifow from Azerbaijan.
In February 2016 Reza Yazdani became Asian champion in the weight class up to 97 kg in Bangkok. He defeated Magomed Musayev in the final. At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, however, he disappointed again. He won there over Ibragim Bolükbasi from Turkey, but lost to Chetag Gasjumow from Azerbaijan. Since this reached the final, he was able to continue in the consolation round and came there first to a victory over Radoslaw Baran from Poland, but then lost to Magomed Ibragimow from Uzbekistan and clearly missed the medal ranks with a 7th place.
After Reza Yazdani was not seen on the international wrestling mat for two years, he started a comeback in 2019. In April of this year, he again won the title in the weight class up to 97 kg in Xi'an, China. In the final he defeated it Batzul Ulziisaichan from Mongolia.
