Georgi Waschajewitsch Ketojew ( Russian Георгий Важаевич Кетоев ; Ossetian Четиты Важайы фырт Геуӕрги ; Armenian Գեորգի Վաժաեւիչ Կետոեւ * 19th November 1985 in Tbilisi , Georgian SSR , Soviet Union ) is a former Russian now Armenian wrestlers Georgian-Ossetian origin. In 2007 he was both world and European champion, in 2008 European champion again. He won a bronze medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics . He achieved all successes in free style.

Career

Georgi Ketojew, whose father is Georgian and whose mother is Ossetin, started wrestling in 1996 at the age of 11 in Vladikavkaz . His Georgian name is Georgi Ketichvili. He also has a brother, Leri Ketichvili , who is also a wrestler but competes for Georgia . Georgi Ketojew was initially a member of the Spartak Wladikawkas sports club and is now part of the RNO Alania sports club . He is a sports student, but denies z. Currently only wrestling for a living. Georgi Ketojew only wrestles in free style and has been coached by Marik Tedejew since the beginning of his career.

So far, he has only competed for Russia on the international wrestling mat . This international career began in 2002, when he became Junior European Champion among the Cadets (Cadets = age group up to the age of 16) in Vilnius . In the junior division he was again junior European champion in 2004 in Sofia and in 2005 again in Vilnius as junior world champion in the middleweight division.

In the senior Georgi Ketojew has in Russia a tremendously heavy competition in the middleweight division. It should therefore be easier to become world champion than Russian champion. In the years 2005 to 2007 he won the top position in Russia by winning several important international tournaments. For this top position in Russia, the placement at the so-called "Ivan Yarigin" tournament in Krasnoyarsk is decisive. At this tournament he took 3rd place in 2005 and 2006. 2005 behind Naurus Temresow and Vadim Lalijew and in 2006 behind Adam Saitijew and Schirwani Muradow , all Caucasians starting for Russia like him. However, he has not yet been used in an international championship among seniors.

In 2007 he won this tournament in the absence of other Russian top wrestlers such as Adam Saitijew and Saschid Saschidow and was then used at the European Championships that year in Sofia . There he defeated former world champion Árpád Ritter from Hungary , Cantero Jackson Vaillant from Italy , Sergei Borchenko from Belarus and Taras Danko from Ukraine . In all four fights he was highly superior and scored in these fights 35: 1 techn. Points. At the 2007 World Championships in Baku he was by far the best wrestler in his weight class and was also world champion with five certain victories . On the way to this success he defeated u. a. the German David Bichinashvili with 5: 1 techn. Points, the American Joe E. Williams , Reza Yazdani from Iran and in the final fight Jussup Abdussalomow from Tajikistan .

In 2008 he won again at the "Iwan Yarigin" tournament ahead of Saschid Saschidow, Adam Saitijew and Soslan Kzojew . So he was qualified for the European Championships in Tampere and the Olympic Games in Beijing . At the European Championships in Tampere he defeated four tough opponents: Árpád Ritter, Wadim Lalijew , meanwhile starting for Armenia , Naurus Temresow, meanwhile starting for Azerbaijan and the 2005 world champion Rewas Mindorashvili from Georgia , whom he won in the final with 2-0 round wins and 7 : 3 tech. Points safely mastered.

As a result of the conflict between Russia and Georgia , which escalated in mid-2008 and culminated in a war, voices were raised in Russia before the Olympic Games in Beijing that not the "half-Georgian" Georgi Ketojew, but another middleweight wrestler, would start there to let. However, the Russian Wrestling Association stuck to Ketojew, who simply could not be ignored because of his sporting successes in 2007 and 2008. Georgi Ketojew won in Beijing first over the Chinese Wang Ying, the Uzbeks Zaurbek Sochiew and Naurus Temresow. Then he met the Georgian Rewas Mindorashvili in the semi-finals . This fight was highly explosive because of the political situation in Georgia. From the beginning it became clear that Georgi Ketojew was not up to this situation. Rewas Mindoraschwili clearly dominated him from the start of the fight and won the first round with 5: 1 techn. Points. Georgi Ketojew scored first in the second round. But after 3.51 minutes of fighting time he was intercepted and shouldered by Mindorashvili. Georgi Ketojew could only fight for the Olympic bronze medal against David Bichinashvili because of this defeat . In this fight he was behind until a few seconds before the end, before he succeeded in a score with which he won the fight and the bronze medal. Olympic champion was Revas Mindorashvili.

After this fight, Georgi Ketojew, who constantly had to train up to 10 kg body weight in order to be able to start in the middleweight division, decided to start in the light heavyweight division (class up to 96 kg body weight) from 2008. He then also won in this weight class at the "Iwan Yarigin" tournament in front of his compatriots Alan Zasejew and Arslanbek Aliyev. At the European Championships in Vilnius , he played the final against Chetag Gasjumow from Azerbaijan , against whom he lost just on points (1: 2 rounds) and was thus vice European champion. At the Russian championship of freestyle wrestlers 2009 he came in the light heavyweight behind Chadschimurad Gazalow and Said Ibragimow only on the 3rd place. Gazalow therefore received the starting place at the World Championships in Herning / Denmark .

In the following years he could no longer qualify for international championships in Russia. He therefore changed nationality in 2013 and became an Armenian. After a three-year ban, he started for this country in 2016. In 2016 he qualified again to take part in the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. There he was eliminated after a defeat in the first round against Elisbar Odikadze from Georgia and only came in 14th place.

At the 2017 World Cup in Paris, however, he succeeded again. He lost there in the weight category up to 97 kg after winning three fights against the Russian superstar Abdulraschid Sadulajew , but this time defeated Elisbar Odikadze in the fight for one of the bronze medals.
