Jacob Varner
Jakob Ernest Varner (born March 24, 1986 in Bakersfield, California ) is an American wrestler . He was 2012 London Olympic Free Style Light Heavyweight Champion .
Career
Jake Varner grew up in Bakersfield and began wrestling at Bakersfield High School, where his father was his first coach. He is fully focused on the free style. In his high school days he was California champion twice and scored 159 victories in 169 fights during that time. In 2005 he finished 2nd at the US Junior Middleweight Championship behind Jake Herbert , but was able to defeat this in the US elimination for the Junior World Championship in Vilnius . In Vilnius he could not place in the front field.
At the US Student Championships (NCAA Championships) he took 2nd place in the middleweight and light heavyweight categories in 2007 and 2008. In 2009 and 2010 he won this light heavyweight title.
Since 2005 Jake Varner started for the Sunkist Kids Wrestling Club (WC) and since 2010 he has been wrestling for the Nittany Lion WC . His coach has been 2004 Olympic Champion Cael Sanderson since then . In 2007 Jake Varner also started at the USA Championships for the first time. He finished 8th in the middleweight division and in 2008 in 7th place in the light heavyweight division. In 2009 he made the big leap forward. He was American light heavyweight champion that year ahead of Kyle Cerminara and Wynn Michalak. He then also prevailed in the World Championship elimination (Trials) with two wins over Andy Hrovat . At the 2009 World Cup in Herning / Denmark he won over Dániel Ligeti , Hungary and Takao Isokawa from Japan , but was then defeated by Saeed Abrahimi from Iran , which meant he was eliminated and finished in 9th place.
In 2010, Jake Varner finished second behind James Bergman at the USA championship and also lost to this wrestler in the world championship elimination. That is why he did not start at the international championships this year. In December 2010 he won in Troy (New York) in an international match against Russia over Marat Ibragimow on points (2: 1 rounds, 0: 2, 4: 1, 2: 1 points).
2011 turned out to be a very successful year for Jake Varner. He first defeated Shamil Akhmedov in New York in an international match against Russia (2-1 rounds, 5-0, 0-1, 4-0 points). Then he became the US light heavyweight champion for the second time ahead of Dan Erekson, Jack Jensen and David Zabriskie. He then also prevailed at the World Championship trials with two wins over Chad Hanke and represented the United States at the World Championship in Istanbul . In Istanbul he defeated Krassimir Kochev , Bulgaria and Wu Yunbilige, China on points and then lost to Serhat Balci from Turkey . Since this reached the finals, he was able to fight for a bronze medal in the consolation round with victories over Rustam Iskandari, Tajikistan and Taimuras Tigijew , Kazakhstan . In October 2011, Jake Varner won his first international championship at the Pan American Games in Guadalajara . He won there in the light heavyweight division before Luis Vivenes Urbaneja, Venezuela , Chetag Pliev, Canada and Juan Martinez Ibarguen, Colombia .
Jakob Varner then made a big hit at the 2012 Olympic Games in London . He was there with victories over Kurban Kurbanow , Uzbekistan , Chetag Pliev, Georgi Gogschelidze , Georgia and Valeri Andriizew , Ukraine , Olympic champion .
After this Olympic victory, he continued his career in the following years. In May 2013 he took 2nd place behind his compatriot Wynn Michalak at the Dan Kolow & Nikolai Petrow Memorial in Sofia. In 2014 he was again USA champion ahead of Wynn Michalak and also prevailed in the US World Cup elimination. At the World Cup in Tashkent, he defeated William Harth from Germany in his first fight, but lost in his next fight against Valery Andriizew. Since he did not reach the final, he was eliminated and only came in 13th place.
On 11/12 In April 2014 he was part of the US team that reached the final at the Team World Cup in Los Angeles, but lost 3: 5 wins against Iran. Jakob Varner presented himself in good shape and defeated Chudurbulga Dorjchand, Mongolia, then lost to Juri Belonowski from Russia and then also beat Javier Cortina from Cuba and the 2013 World Cup third place Mohammadhossein Askari Mohammadian from Iran on points.
