Robert Roth (1922)

Robert Roth (* 5. July 1898 ; † 17th November 1959 in Nidau ) was a Swiss wrestler and oscillators . He was Olympic champion in Antwerp in 1920 in freestyle wrestling in the heavyweight division and twice wrestling king .

Career

Robert Roth began playing the Swiss national sport of wrestling as a teenager at the Burgdorf Wrestling Club . This sport is very similar to Olympic freestyle wrestling because, in contrast to Greco-Roman wrestling, leg attacks are also allowed. Robert Roth and many other Swiss wrestlers took advantage of this fact in the 1920s and 1930s and also started competitions in free style wrestling.

In 1920 he competed at the Olympic Games in Antwerp in the heavyweight division and won the free style gold medal with three wins over Jussi Salila, Finland , Fred Meyer, USA , and Nat Pendleton , USA .

Robert Roth could not take part in other international championships in wrestling, because in his time in the amateur field in free style neither world nor European championships took place. Roth moved to the professional wrestlers for a short time in 1922 and won an unofficial world championship title in Geneva with a victory over Salvator Chevalier (France) (from 1923 to 1949 no official wrestling world championships were held) and confirmed this in Paris in 1924 with a draw against Nat Pendleton (USA), whom he defeated at the 1920 Olympic Games. In 1928 he allowed himself to be amateurized and in 1928 and 1931 he won the first Swiss championship titles in wrestling.

His younger brothers Hans (1903–1964) and Fritz (* 1900) were also heavyweight Olympic freestyle wrestlers. At the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris , Hans Roth reached 8th place with a victory over Hjalmar Nyström , Finland, and a defeat against Toivo Pohjala, Finland, and Fritz Roth 11th place with a defeat against Poul Hansen (Denmark). Hans Roth was also king of wrestling in 1929 and 1931.

In wrestling, Robert Roth was one of the most successful Swiss athletes of the 1920s. He became the Swiss King of Wrestling in Langenthal in 1919 and in Bern in 1921 , the highest title that can be awarded in this sport. He came third at the Swiss Confederation in Basel in 1929 , and second in Zurich in 1931 . He also won a total of 28 wrestling tournaments in Switzerland.

Life

Robert Roth came from the Emmental . In 1925, together with his brothers Niklaus and Louis, he took over the “Löwen” inn and butcher's shop in Oberburg and resigned from professional wrestling. Most recently he was the owner of a real estate and fiduciary office in Nidau. There he died at the age of 61.
