Leri Chabelowi

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Leri Chabelowi ( Georgian ლერი ხაბელოვი ; Russian Лери Габриелович Хабелов Leri Gabrijelowitsch Chabelow * 5. July 1964 in Tbilisi ) is a former wrestler of Ossetian origin who for the Soviet Union and Russia launched, and current Georgian politicians .

Career

Leri Chabelowi comes from Georgia and was born in Ossete. After the Second World War, Ossetia developed into a stronghold of the sport of wrestling, which produced countless world-class wrestlers who competed for the Soviet Union, Russia and sometimes for other countries. Chabelowi also developed into a world-class free-style wrestler with the help of trainers Arsen Fadsajew and B. Shawlokow at ZKSA Wladikawkas . As an 18-year-old he made his debut on the international wrestling mat at the 1982 World Junior Championships in Colorado Springs . There he won the world title in the class up to 87 kg body weight. In the junior division he was also world and European champion in 1983 and 1984.

In 1985 he made his senior debut when he became European heavyweight champion in Leipzig . In the final he defeated the experienced Uwe Neupert from Jena with 3: 1 points. In the same year he became world heavyweight champion for the first time in Budapest . In 1986 he was only used in a World Cup tournament because he had only finished 2nd in the Soviet championships behind Aslan Chadarzew .

In 1987 and 1988 he was again very successful at the European Championships and the 1987 World Cup, as he won the title at each of these three events. In 1987 he beat the Romanian Vasile Puşcaşu safely on points at both the European Championship and the World Cup . For this reason, he started as a big favorite at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul . He also came in convincing style in the final battle for the gold medal, but was surprisingly defeated there against Puşcaşu, who scored a point at the beginning of the fight and successfully brought it 1-0 over time, no matter how hard Chabelowi tried to fight the fight turn.

For Chabelowi, winning the silver medal was a disappointment. He therefore took a break from international championships in 1989, but was back in 1990 at the World Cup in Tokyo and won the world title there again. But he had to overcome a moment of shock when he was knocked off the mat in a valueless fight in the pool final together with the American Kirk Trost. His previous victories were enough to win the pool. He then secured the title by defeating the Bulgarian Stojan Nentschew .

In 1991 he defended his world title in Varna with a final victory over Mark Coleman from the USA . In the pool final he defeated Heiko Balz from Luckenwalde with 3-0 points.

1992 became the most successful year in Leri Chabelowi's career. First he became European champion with a final victory over Heiko Balz in Kaposvár and then he defeated the same wrestler in Barcelona in the fight for the gold medal with 2: 1 points. He was finally an Olympic champion .

After 1992 Chabelowi also won the world title in 1993 in front of the Turks Ali Kayalı and Heiko Balz. That was the last title he won.

In 1994 he was not on the international wrestling mat and in 1995 he started in the super heavyweight division. In this weight class, however, he could not prevail. He took 3rd place both at the European Championships in Freiburg im Üechtland and at the World Championships in Atlanta . He was beaten by Mahmut Demir from Turkey and Bruce Baumgartner from the USA.

At the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, he started again in the heavyweight division to win another medal. But he didn't succeed. Although he won his first fight, he then suffered defeats from Abbas Jadidi from Iran and Oleg Ladik from Canada , which meant his departure and put him in 14th place.

Then Leri Chabelowi ended his career as an active wrestler and became a coach. He is currently the Minister of Sports of Georgia. In September 2006 he was inducted into the FILA International Wrestling Hall of Fame for his services to wrestling .
