Ivan Sergejewitsch Jarygin ( Russian Иван Сергеевич Ярыгин; born July 11, 1948 in Ust-Kamsas , Kemerovo Oblast ; † October 11, 1997 near Neftekumsk ) was a Soviet wrestler .

Career

Ivan Jarygin grew up in Sisaya, Krasnoyarsk Region . He attended school there and mainly played soccer. After school he went to Abakan and trained as a driver. In the meantime he had developed into a strong young man and began wrestling at a wrestling school. Later he belonged to Trud Krasnoyarsk . His first coach was VI Kharkov. After he was the first Soviet heavyweight (up to 100 kg body weight), freestyle champion in 1970 at the age of 22, he was appointed to the Soviet national team and used at the European Championships in Berlin in 1970 , where he, however, suffered a defeat against the experienced Ahmet Ayık from Turkey had to make do with second place. His coach was now Dmitri Mindiaschwili . At the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich , he defeated six opponents in a record time of 7 minutes and 20 seconds and won the gold medal. In 1976, a second gold medal followed, which he won in Montreal . After 1980, Iwan Jarygin ended his career as an active wrestler. He attended the Pedagogical University in Krasnoyarsk and in 1981 became the head coach of the Soviet national relay of freestyle wrestlers. During the difficult time of political change in the Soviet Union in 1991/92 he was elected President of the Russian Wrestling Association. He was killed on October 11, 1997 in a car accident near Neftekumsk in the Stavropol region . In his honor, the Russian Wrestling Association organizes the Iwan Jarygin wrestling tournament every year, at which a large part of the world's elite freestyle wrestlers meet. In September 2010 he was inducted into the FILA International Wrestling Hall of Fame for his services to wrestling .
