Neftekumsk ( Russian Нефтекумск ) is a city in the Stavropol region ( Russia ) with 27,687 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The city is located in the northern foothills of the Caucasus, about 300 km east of the regional capital Stavropol on the right bank of the Kuma .

Neftekumsk is the administrative center of the raion of the same name .

The nearest railway station is located in 80 kilometers away Budyonnovsk .

history

Neftekumsk emerged from 1958 in connection with the development of the Stavropol oil and gas deposit discovered in 1953 . The name is derived from the name of the river and the Russian word neft for petroleum .

In 1962 the place received the status of an urban-type settlement and in 1968 the town charter .
