history
Georgievsk was founded in 1777 as a fortress on the so-called Azov - Mozdok defense line. The place was named after Saint George , who traditionally symbolizes victory in Russia. The fortress also became known through the so-called Treaty of Georgievsk from 1783, with which the Russian Empire secured an improved foreign policy position in the Caucasus region.
In 1786 Georgievsk received city status and was the capital of the Caucasian Governorate from 1802 to 1822 until its dissolution. In the course of the 19th century, trade developed in the city, so that up to three annual markets were held. After the October Revolution , trade largely lost its importance and gave way to the first industrial companies in the 1920s.
During the Second World War , Georgievsk was under the control of the German Wehrmacht from August 1942 until the North Caucasian Operation in January 1943 .
After the war, the Soviet POW camp 147 existed in the city for German POWs from World War II .
