Kurskaja ( Russian Курска́я ) is a stanitsa in the Stavropol region in Russia with 12,045 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The place is located in the foothills of the Caucasus about 220 km as the crow flies southeast of the regional administrative center Stavropol near the border with the Republic of Kabardino-Balkaria and about 25 km north of the border with the Republic of Ingushetia . It is mainly located on the left bank of the Kura River , which arises as a bifurcation of the Malka and is lost a good 50 km east of Kurskaya in a semi-desert area. Since 1948, the river has been dammed up to the 5 km² large reservoir Kurskoje Wodochranilishche , which was originally used to generate energy and is now used for irrigation, recreation and fishing.
Kurskaya is the administrative center of Kurski Rajon and the seat of the rural community (selskoje posselenije) Kurski selsowet, which also includes the village of Dobrovolnoje (12 km north-northeast), the settlement of Rowny (13 km north-north-west) and the hamlet (chutor) Novaya Derewnja (actually to the west) and Novotavritschesky (11 km north) belong.
history
The place was founded on July 2, 1784 by resettlers from central Russia, who were later counted among the Cossacks , which in 1833 resulted in the granting of the status of Stanitsa . The place name refers to the river.
Since January 2, 1935, Kurskaja has been the administrative center of a Rajon. During the Second World War , the Staniza was occupied by the German Wehrmacht from mid-August to the end of December 1942 and was located in the immediate front area for a long time.

The Stanitsa is bypassed south of the regional road 07K-046, which connects Novopavlovsk, 70 km to the west, with the city of Mosdok in Ingushetia, 35 km south of Kuskaya. The nearest train station on the Rostov-on-Don - Makhachkala - Baku route is also located there .
