Novopawlowsk ( Russian Новопавловск ) is a city in the Stavropol region ( Russia ) with 26,562 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The city is located in the northern Caucasus foothills about 230 km southeast of the regional capital Stavropol on the Kura (not to be confused with the Kura of the same name in Georgia and Azerbaijan ).
Novopavlovsk is the administrative center of the Rajons Kirowski.
The city lies on the Rostov-on-Don - Vladikavkaz railway line, which was opened in 1875, and is the main line of the North Caucasus Railway . The city's station is called Apollonskaya .
history
The place was created in 1777 in connection with the construction of a fortress named after the patron saint of the then Tsar Paul , the Apostle Paulus (Russian Pavel ) in the course of the Azov - Mozdok defense line along the southern border of the empire at that time . The Stanitsa of the Terek Cossacks that was built near the fortress was named Novopawlowskaja (Russian novo- for new- ).
In 1981 the city charter was granted under its current name.

Culture and sights
In the Stanitsa Solskaya of the Kirovsky district, the Nikolai Church ( Свято-Николаевская церковь / Swjato-Nikolajewskaja Zerkow) is the oldest church in the area (1902).
In the vicinity are the archaeological sites Novopavlovskoye and Kurannoye from the 1st millennium BC. And a Kurgan from the late Golden Horde (16th century).

Novopavlovsk is the center of an agricultural area with a food industry oriented towards it .
