geography

The settlement is about 150 km as the crow flies southeast of the regional administrative center of Stavropol on the right bank of the Podkumok river .

Svobody belongs to the district of Pyatigorsk and is located just over a kilometer south of the center of the city of Pyatigorsk. It connects directly to the territory of the city, from which it is separated by the Podkumok, as well as to the eastwardly extending settlement Goryachevodsky , which is also part of the urban district .

The village (selo) Solotushka, a few kilometers upstream on the left bank of the Podkumok, is subordinate to the administration of the settlement .

history

Until the beginning of the 20th century, the area of today's settlement, south of the Podkumok and west of the then Stanitsa Goryachevodskaya, was administered by the Pyatigorsk forestry under the field name Dubrowka . Private house building was prohibited there. Nevertheless, from around 1905 onwards, illegal housing developments emerged, which were legalized in 1909 after legal disputes. The settlement called Nachalowka by the residents received the official name Alexejewski after the Russian tsarevich and heir to the throne Alexei Nikolajewitsch .

After the fall of the last Russian tsar Nicholas II , the settlement was renamed Possjolok Swobody - "Settlement of Freedom" - in 1917. After the first apartment blocks , later also as prefabricated buildings , were built on its territory as part of the growth of the city of Pyatigorsk , it received the status of an urban-type settlement in 1960.
