history
The city was founded in 1953 and was originally a workers' settlement that belonged to a nearby developed deposit of uranium ore . Despite the proximity of the place to the spa towns of the North Caucasus and their mineral water springs, it is not itself considered a spa.
In 1956 the settlement was given city status and the name Lermontowski , which was changed in 1967 to the current name Lermontow . This was chosen in honor of the poet Mikhail Lermontov , who had spent a long time in this area and died in nearby Pyatigorsk in 1841.
