Mikhailovsk ( Russian Миха́йловск ) is a city in southern Russia in the Stavropol region . It has 70,981 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010) and is located 12 km northeast of the regional capital Stavropol .

history

The place was founded in 1784 as a village called Mikhailovskoye by settlers from the Kursk Governorate (today 's Kursk Oblast ). For a long time it served as one of the southern border towns of the Russian Empire ; At the beginning of the 19th century the village received the status of Stanitsa and its inhabitants have belonged to the Cossacks ever since . In 1870 Mikhailovskoye became an ordinary village again after losing its military importance.

From 1963 to 1999 the village was called Shpakovskoye ( Шпаковское ) in honor of an army officer with the surname Shpak. It was not until 1999 that it received city rights and its current name, which was derived from the old village name. The Rajon , the administrative center of which is Mikhailovsk, is still called Shpakovskoye.
