Jessentukskaja ( Russian Ессентукская ) is a Staniza in the Stavropol region ( Russia ) with 20 166 inhabitants (14 October 2010).

geography

Stanitsa is located on the northern edge of the Greater Caucasus , about 130 km as the crow flies southeast of the regional administrative center Stavropol , on the right bank of the Podkumok tributary of the Kuma , directly opposite the eponymous city of Essentuki . The city of Essentuki and the Stanitsa Essentukskaja practically form a unit with a total of just over 100,000 inhabitants.

The Stanitsa Jessentukskaja is the administrative center of the Predgorny Rajon (literally "Vorgebirgsrajon"); the neighboring Essentuki forms a rajon-free urban district . The rural settlement of Yessentukskaya includes not only Stanitsa itself, but also the settlement of Gorny, 8 km to the south.

history

Stanitsa was founded by Cossacks in 1825/26 at the instigation of General Alexei Yermolows . In the early years of Stanitsa Jessentukskaja, the episode Princess Mary from Mikhail Lermontov's novel A Hero of Our Time from 1840 is set there.

Initially, the Stanitsa was on the left bank of the Podkumok. Not far from this part of town, the health resort and later the city of Essentuki arose . After the Second World War , the entire and much larger part of the Stanitsa, located to the left of the river, was annexed to the city, so that the Stanitsa has only been located on the right bank of the river, where it has now (as of 2010) almost reached its pre-war size. As part of an administrative reform, Jessentukskaya became the administrative center of the newly created Predgorny district on November 23, 1959.
