Swetlograd ( Russian Светлогра́д ) is a city in Russia with 38,520 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010). It is located in the foothills of the Caucasus in the Stavropol region ( North Caucasus Federal District ), about 85 kilometers northeast of Stavropol , on the Kalaus River .
history
The place was founded in 1750 as a village called Petrowskoje ( Петро́вское ). In 1965 it received its city status and its current name, which has no historical origin and only means something like bright city . The Rajon Petrovskoye whose administrative center Svetlograd, but it kept its original name.

Economy and Transport
The area around Svetlograd is mainly characterized by agriculture. There are few industrial establishments in the city; including several textile and food factories and a building materials factory.
The city has a train station on the Stavropol – Budjonnowsk railway line , and there is also a direct railway line from Swetlograd to Elista . Both routes are operated by the North Caucasian Railway Company.
