The German field handball championship in 1961 was played in a final tournament between October 1 and October 22, 1961. The tournament was the twelfth championship round in men's field handball organized by the DHB . The final took place on October 22, 1961 in front of 31,400 spectators, as in the previous year the Oberhausen Stadium Niederrhein was the venue.
And the opponents in the final were the same as in the previous year: Once again, the runner-up from the previous year, TuS Lintfort , and the defending champion TSV 1860 Ansbach had qualified for the final. This year TuS had the better end for itself and became the new German champion after a 16:15 win . For Lintfort this was the third field handball championship in the club's history.

In addition, the 16th team came second in the South West German regional championship, Kickers Offenbach , who had prevailed against Berlin runner-up Charlottenburger HC in a qualifying game on September 23, 1961 with 21:14.
The playing time was 2 × 30 minutes, in the event of a tie after regular playing time, an extension of 2 × 10 minutes was carried out.
Tournament course
In the games of the first round, the favored teams prevailed; All four West German clubs made it to the quarter-finals, as well as two South German teams and the North German and Berlin champions. The later final opponents from Ansbach and Lintfort won their away games convincingly.
In the quarter-finals, Ansbach eliminated TSV Grün-Weiß Dankersen, a club that had reached a handball final for the first time this year; While the successes of the Ansbach family reached their zenith in the three years between 1960 and 1962 and were limited to field handball, the future should belong to Dankersen. Lintfort won in Wolfsburg very narrowly with one goal difference due to the good defensive work, in the semi-final game against Göppingen's "Kempa-Buben", winners of the indoor championship of this season, the Lintforters even needed extra time to play into the final. Ansbach, on the other hand, won his semi-final against Leverkusen sovereign, and could therefore be considered slightly favored for the final in Oberhausen. In a thrilling final of two equally strong teams - the lead changed several times - Lintfort finally narrowly prevailed.
