16 teams competed against each other in an elimination tournament, the preliminary round (round of 16) was played in the simple knockout system , in the intermediate round (quarter-finals) and in the semifinals, the winners of the respective pairings were determined in the first and second legs. The winners of the semi-finals contested the final, no further placement games were held.

The following 15 teams had qualified directly for the preliminary round of the tournament via the respective regional championships; The 1963 German indoor handball champions, like the THW Kiel in the previous year , did not qualify for the large field finals:

In addition, the fourth team of the West German Championship, TuS 05 Wellinghofen , came as the 16th team , who had prevailed against the Berlin runner-up Berliner SV 1892 in a qualifying game on September 15 with 14:12.

The playing time was 2 × 30 minutes, in the event of a tie after regular playing time, an extension of 2 × 10 minutes was carried out.

Tournament course

As expected, the favored teams usually prevailed in the preliminary round; Surprising, however, was the clear opening win of TuS Wellinghofen, which had only been able to qualify afterwards, against the "old master" Frisch Auf Göppingen, the winner of the South German Championship. And Wellinghofen was able to use the momentum from the opening game in the intermediate rounds against Hamburger SV: After a narrow defeat in Hamburg, a clear home win followed in the second leg. Wellinghofen only had to admit defeat in the semifinals against the West German rivals from Solingen. After a 12:10 win in the first leg and a 0: 3 lead in the second leg in Solingen v. a. Recognize the tactical superiority of the opponent, Solingen turned the game to the final score of 7: 3.

VfL Wolfsburg had not given up a game on the way to the final, but had prevailed against strong opponents such as the champions of the 1961 season , TuS Lintfort. Noteworthy were the victories against the runner-up of the 1962 season , Grün-Weiß Dankersen, who had previously defeated the title holder from Ansbach. The BSV Solingen, on the other hand, had to deal with opponents who were to be assessed as being weaker, had also lost two of their games, but had shown the necessary cleverness and strong nerves. to be able to keep tight results.

In the final, however, Wolfsburg proved to be the tactically superior team - after the Solingen's early assault was slowed down: Solingen was still leading 2: 5 in the 25th minute. After that, however, the ball athletes did not succeed much. While Wolfsburg made it 4: 5 in the remaining five minutes before the break, the Solingen strikers discarded two penalty throws in the same period. The reporter for the Hamburger Abendblatt attributed the Solingen's break-in in the second half and the ultimately safe victory of VfL Wolfsburg to the "ice-cold routine" and team unity: the meanwhile 30-year-olds have been playing at a high level in the same formation for years together, had won the North German Championship six times in a row and thus the qualification for the finals. With three quick goals after the break, VfL created some distance to wear down the opponent in the game, which was then based on ball possession and goal protection.
