The association for physical exercises Wolfsburg e. V. , commonly known as VfL Wolfsburg , is (as of June 1, 2015) with more than 5000 members in 29 departments one of the largest and most broadly based sports clubs in Lower Saxony .

For decades, VfL Wolfsburg was able to assert itself in various sports at national level and won numerous German championship titles; The club is also known for its successful youth work. However, the club gained broader national and international awareness primarily through its professional football department, which was spun off into VfL Wolfsburg-Fußball GmbH in 2001 and has been a wholly-owned subsidiary of Volkswagen AG independent of the club since 2007 .

society

The club was founded on September 12, 1945, a few months after the end of World War II , under the name Volkssport- und Kulturverein (VSK) Wolfsburg. A short time later, the VSK was renamed the Verein für Leibesübungen Volkswagenwerk and then transferred to the Verein für Leibesübungen Wolfsburg . The first departments of VfL Wolfsburg included football, handball, gymnastics, tennis, cycling, boxing and chess. Many of these departments had sporting successes.

Club colors

The then district youth worker Bernward Elberskirch still had ten soccer jerseys on hand, they were green. The trousers were sewn from privately donated sheets by the players' wives. When the city flag of Wolfsburg was introduced in 1955, the colors green and white were chosen. These have also become the official Wolfsburg city colors.

GmbH

The profit-oriented professional football company was founded on January 16, 2001. On May 23, 2001, the Wolfsburg District Court spun off the club's licensed players department into VfL Wolfsburg-Fußball GmbH. Since Volkswagen AG had previously sponsored the club for more than 20 years, it was allowed - contrary to the 50 + 1 rule - to take over 90 percent of the shares in VfL Wolfsburg-Fußball GmbH through a special regulation. The association held 10 percent of the shares. Since the approval of 93 of the 94 club delegates at the delegates' meeting of the club on November 28, 2007, the GmbH has been a wholly owned subsidiary of Volkswagen AG.

Club structure

The association VfL Wolfsburg e. V. consists of the following 29 departments:

The approximately 17,000 members of the WölfeClub and the WölfiClub of VfL Wolfsburg-Fußball GmbH are not full members of the club.

badminton

In badminton , Willi Braun , Harald Klauer, Volker Renzelmann, Elke Weber, Cathrin Hoppe and Ingrid Thaler-Morsch were particularly responsible for Wolfsburg's successes. Willi Braun was one of the most successful German badminton players internationally in the 1970s . Together with Roland Maywald, he won the European title in men's doubles in 1972 and 1974, after having won bronze medal in the same discipline with Franz Beinvogl in 1968. In 1976 he retired from the international stage with bronze at the European Championships.

The first team is currently playing in the Lower Saxony Oberliga.

Field handball

The greatest success of the handball department was achieved on the large field , where VfL Wolfsburg became German champions in 1963 . In the final in Wuppertal on October 27th of that year BSV Solingen 98 was defeated 9: 6. Already in the championship finals in 1958 , the team had advanced into the final, but then lost to Hamborn 07 with 9:10. Peter Baronsky and Paul Schwope from VfL became world champions with the all-German team at the 1959 field handball world championship.

From 1956 to 1962, VfL Wolfsburg was champion of the Lower Saxony Association League seven times in a row (at that time the highest division) and won the finals for the North German Championship six times in a row from 1958 to 1963, in which the champions and runners-up of the four association leagues in Northern Germany (apart from Lower Saxony, the North Sea and Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein) participated. From 1957 to 1965, the "Wolves" also qualified nine times in a row for the final round of the German championship, which was held in the knockout system with the best placed in the respective regional championships.

In the 1967 season VfL Wolfsburg was one of the founding members of the Feldhandball-Bundesliga , but rose after the first season with only one win (10: 7 against TuS Wellinghofen) and a draw (12:12 at BSV Solingen 98) at 16 Defeats and made it back to the top division in the episode no more.
