Alexander Graf von der Groeben (born October 5, 1955 in Ratingen ), formerly called the "Judo Graf" by the media, is a German sports journalist , actor and former judoka .

Life

Alexander von der Groeben comes from the noble family Groeben and was a successful judo fighter in the 1980s. In addition to winning titles at the German championships both individually and with his team from VfL Wolfsburg , his most important sporting successes were his victories at the European championships in 1984 in Liège and 1985 in Hamar, as well as third place at the 1989 world championships in Belgrade . In 1984 and 1988 he took part in the Olympic Games , but did not win a medal.

In 1988 von der Groeben appeared in an extra role in the film Walter Bockmayer's Geierwally . He represented one of the pages of the Hereditary Duchess portrayed by Elisabeth Volkmann , dressed exclusively in lederhosen and carnival Tyrolean hats , and although his role had no dialogue and was exclusively joking and decorative, his full name was given in the end credits.

After his sports career, von der Groeben worked as a commentator for Premiere . From 1993 to 1995 he hosted the sports program “ Daily ran ” on Sat.1 . Later he was a commentator for the sports broadcaster Eurosport , where he was particularly responsible for the martial arts judo and sumo . As the successor to René Hiepen , he hosted boxing live on the second from 2007 to 2010 . In 2011 he returned to Sat.1 as a boxing commentator. At the Olympic Games in 2012 and 2016, he commented on the judo fights for ZDF.

Groeben's wife Ulrike is the long-time sports presenter for the news magazine RTL currently on the private broadcaster RTL . Their children together are the actors Maximilian and Carolin von der Groeben .

Since the late 1990s, Alexander von der Groeben has also increasingly been active as an actor in film and television, and since the mid-2000s in the theater. At the end of February 2009, he played a supporting role in the RTL soap Everything that counts , in which his daughter Carolin also participated. However, there was no joint appearance of the two.
