The German field handball championship 1958 was played in a final tournament between June 1 and June 29, 1958. The tournament was the ninth round of the men's field handball championship organized by the DHB . The final took place on June 29, 1958 in front of 25,000 spectators in Oberhausen's Niederrhein stadium.

The new German champions were surprisingly third-placed in the West German championship round , Sportfreunde Hamborn 07 , who won the final against North German champions VfL Wolfsburg just 10: 9. Hamborn won the only field handball championship title in the club's history when he participated in the finals for the first time.

This season ended one of the great success stories of German handball: the last time the SV Polizei Hamburg , the dominant club in the hall and on the field in the first half of the 1950s, was able to qualify for a final round.

Tournament course

The tournament winner Sportfreunde Hamborn 07 had only qualified as third place in the West German Championship; However, the Hamborner showed in the first game that they could be expected: With the victory in Hamburg against the series winner of the earlier DHB championships on the field and in the hall, the SV Police Hamburg, Hamborn managed the first surprise of the tournament , the second followed in the semifinals with a narrow win against West Champion Bayer 04 Leverkusen. And the Hamborner were able to preserve their form until the final; there the biggest surprise followed with the win against the stronger North German champions from Wolfsburg.
