Field handball Bundesliga 1968

The field handball Bundesliga 1969 was the third Bundesliga season in German field handball . The games for the 20th field handball championship of the DHB were played in a north and a south relay between April and August 1969; the final took place on August 9, 1969 in front of 15,000 spectators in Mannheim's Rhein-Neckar Stadium .

The new German champion was SG Leutershausen , which defeated TSV Grün-Weiß Dankersen in the final of the season winners with 18:16 in extra time. In the fourth attempt - after the runner-up in the previous year and in the finals in 1956 and 1957 - SGL won the first field handball championship in the club's history.

At the end of this season six teams were relegated to the regional leagues, as the number of participants in the Bundesliga was to be reduced from 20 to 16 for the following season: TSV 1860 Ansbach , SVH Kassel , TuS Schutterwald , Hohner SV Eintracht , VfL Bad Schwartau and the Büdelsdorfer TSV . In addition, VfL Gummersbach , winner of the 1969 indoor handball championship in spring , and Hamburger SV withdrew from field handball operations.

The defending champion TSV Grün-Weiß Dankersen won the European Cup for the second time against the German champions of the previous year, TV Oppum .

mode

The league was played in two seasons for the last time with ten teams each, the national leagues north and south. The two season winners who played the final of the German championship were determined in the first and second legs.

The last three teams of each season had to relegate to the regional leagues.

Climbers

The DHB drew the first conclusion from the lost attractiveness of the sport and reduced the number of participants for each season from ten to eight; with three relegated teams in the north and south, there should only be one promoted team for the following 1970 Bundesliga season . For qualification, qualifying games of the regional league champions of this summer season 1969 were scheduled.

The promoted to the Bundesliga North was determined in a mini-tournament of the champions of the regional associations West ( ESV Jahn Rheinhausen ), North ( Eintracht Braunschweig ) and Berlin ( Reinickendorfer Füchse ):

ESV Jahn Rheinhausen - Eintracht Braunschweig: 20:11
Eintracht Braunschweig - Reinickendorfer Füchse: 13:12
Reinickendorfer Füchse - ESV Jahn Rheinhausen : 6:11

This made Rheinhausen a newcomer, but since Hamburger SV and VfL Gummersbach withdrew their teams from the Northern League after the end of the season, all three teams were able to advance.

The champions of the south German ( TS Esslingen 1890 ) and the south-west German regional association ( TSV Braunshardt ) played the promoted to the Bundesliga South in the first and second leg:

TSV Braunshardt - TS Esslingen 1890 : 16:14 / 10:18

Esslingen was promoted.

Summary of the season

The Bundesliga North was dominated by TSV Dankersen at will. The team around the exceptional player Herbert Lübking finished the league round with a lead of eleven points on the pursuers Hamburger SV. In the south, the same teams as in the previous year were divided into places one to three, while TSV Birkenau had replaced TV Großwallstadt in the role of the toughest pursuer of SG Leutershausen; SGL was able to keep their local rivals at a close distance at the end of the points round.

Dankersen went into the final as a high favorite and initially lived up to this role: SG Leutershausen was at halftime with the same result that the team had, conversely, led against TV Oppum in the previous year's final. And like Oppum back then, the SGL managed to intercept the opponent, playing into the hands of the Leutershausen team that Lübking had to retire injured during the game. Leutershausen equalized seconds before the end of regular time and turned the game around in overtime to the final score of 18:16 - the same result as in the 1968 final, with the better sign for SGL.
