The German field handball championship 1956 was played in a final tournament between June 10th and June 30th, 1956. The tournament was the seventh championship round in men's field handball organized by the DHB . The final took place on June 30, 1956 in front of 20,000 spectators in the Wuppertal stadium at the zoo .

SV Bayer 04 Leverkusen became the new German champions . Last year's runner-up defeated SG Leutershausen in the final 15: 8 and was able to celebrate the first field handball championship title in the club's history.

The mode is changed again, but this time to a form, which in general terms up to the introduction of the field handball league was maintained 1967: 16 teams occurred in an eliminator tournament Ko system with preliminary round (second round), intermediate round (quarter-finals) and final against each other on, the winners of the semi-finals contested the final; Placement games were not held.

In addition, the third team in the Southwest German Championship, TV 07 Hörnsheim , came as the 16th team, who had beaten SSC Southwest Berlin , runner-up of the Berlin handball association, in a qualifying game on June 3, 1956, with 15:11.

The playing time was 2 × 30 minutes, in the event of a tie after regular playing time, an extension of 2 × 10 minutes was carried out.

Tournament course

In the preliminary round, the favored teams prevailed in their home games, with two exceptions: The narrow success of the Baden champion from Leutershausen at the West German runner-up SV Westerholt was surprising, the clear success of the Gummersbacher in Berlin at the BSV 1892 was a sensation, after all the Berliners became German indoor handball champions in spring.

The intermediate round then brought the big death of favorites of the North German DHB old masters. Both the THW Kiel and the defending champion SV Police Hamburg were defeated by their opponents from Gummersbach and Leutershausen : The THW was always behind in the away game against Gummersbach; the hamburgers on the other hand looked at halftime before 6,000 spectators in Weinheim still like the winner of (6: 3 out of Hamburg view) before they had to close defeat the greater use of SGL. As in the preliminary round, Bayer Leverkusen clearly prevailed and also underlined their role as favorites against Zuffenhausen.

After Leverkusen played dizzy in the semifinals in Stuttgart Göppingen, while Leutershausen ultimately defeated Gummersbach clearly but more difficultly, the West Champion was the favorite in the final against the North Baden village club - and was able to confirm this role impressively.
