The SV Westerholt ( Sportverein Westerholt 14/19 eV ) is a sports club from the Westphalian Westerholt , a district of the city of Herten .

The club has the departments of heavy athletics and football , the original handball department, the most successful club division in terms of sport history , was spun off from the entire club in 2005 to become the independent club Handball SV Westerholt e. V.

The club's greatest sporting success was the German runner-up for the men's team in the 1959 indoor handball championship.

Handball

Handball has been played in the gymnastics clubs in Westerholt since 1923, but major sporting successes were not achieved until the post-war period .

Field handball

The first regional field handball championships were held in 1949 : Westerholt became district champion, district champion and at the end of the season also champion of the Westphalia regional association. In the following season in 1950, the club achieved participation in the West German field handball championship, but could not qualify there for the final round of the German championship in field handball. Westerholt managed to do this only once, but at the final tournament for the German Field Handball Championship in 1956 , the team was eliminated in the first round with a surprising home defeat against SG Leutershausen .

Indoor handball

SV Westerholt was far more successful in indoor handball, which was still young at the time: Between 1950 and 1962, when the leagues of the regional associations were the highest leagues in indoor handball, the team was champion of the Westphalian regional association ten times (1950–1952, 1955, 1957–1962), and three times West German champion (1955, 1957, 1958).

With these three regional championships as well as with the West German runner-up in 1959 the qualification for the final tournaments for the German championship in the hall was connected. SV Westerholt reached fourth place in the 1955 finals and third place in 1957 , a success that could be repeated at the 1958 finals . At the championship finals in 1959 , the team's greatest success was when they reached the final , but the Westerholter had no chance against the dominant handball team of those years, Frisch Auf Göppingen , and were defeated 5: 8.

The great successes of the 1950s could not be built on, the team had to accept relegations several times and now plays as handball SV Westerholt (as of 2018) in the Landesliga Westfalen.
