German handball championship 1958

The German handball championship in 1959 was the tenth final round of the German championship in indoor handball for men organized by the DHB . It was played on March 7th and 8th in front of 7,000 spectators in the sold-out Grugahalle in Essen , in a final tournament with a group phase in the preliminary round.

The TC Frisch Auf Göppingen was able to repeat its previous year's success, celebrating the fourth championship with the 8: 5 final victory over SV Westerholt and was thus the new record champion, together with the SV Hamburg Police , who had dominated the first four finals 1950-1954.

mode

The champions of the five regional associations as well as the runner-up of the host association, this year the West German handball association, were eligible to participate in the final round . In two preliminary round groups, the first two teams qualified for the semi-finals, the bottom of each group played for fifth place.

VfL Wolfsburg (regional association champion north), SV Bayer 04 Leverkusen (regional association champion west) and TSG Haßloch (regional association champion south-west) played in group A.

In the other group, the defending champion TC Frisch Auf Göppingen (regional association champion south), SV Westerholt (vice champion regional association west) and the police SV Berlin (regional / regional association champion Berlin) met each other.

The playing time was 2 × 20 minutes.

Tournament course

What had already been suggested in the previous year became evident at this tournament: Frisch Auf Göppingen set new standards in German indoor handball. Technically and tactically, the Kempa protégés were far ahead of their opponents from the other regional associations, even if in the preliminary round the high-scoring draw against the Berlin champions was only secured with a directly converted free throw after the end of regular time. The Göppingen had internalized the playing system of their trainer Bernhard Kempa : Not the outstanding strengths of individual players, but the unified team performance led to success.

Frisch Auf won the final against the West German champions from Westerholt 8: 5, with the same result as in the preliminary round match. The result, however, belies the oppressive superiority of the Göppingeners: Frisch Auf led in the final in the middle of the second half with 8: 1, before the team slowed down in view of the sure victory. The correspondent for the Hamburger Abendblatt reported - with all admiration for Kempa's successful youth work - a "monotonous" finale and was right with his prophecy that Frisch Auf would become the sole record champion in the following years.
