The German field handball championship in 1959 was played in a final tournament between October 4 and November 8, 1959. The tournament was the tenth championship round in men's field handball organized by the DHB . The final took place on November 8, 1959 in front of 30,000 spectators in Duisburg's Wedaustadion .
The new German champion was TuS Lintfort , who won the final against SV Bayer 04 Leverkusen just 10: 9. After the championship in 1940, Lintfort won the second field handball title in the club's history.
mode
For the first time the tournament took place in autumn of that year; the late date was retained from 1959 until the last final of this type in 1966.
16 teams occurred in an eliminator in tournament Ko system with preliminary round (second round), intermediate round (quarter-finals) and final against each other, the winner of the semi-final denied the final; Placement games were not held.
The following 15 teams had qualified directly for the preliminary round of the tournament via the respective regional championships:
North German Championship:
West German Championship:
- SV Bayer 04 Leverkusen
- Sportfreunde Hamborn 07 (defending champion)
- TuS Lintfort
- VfL Gummersbach
Southwest German Championship:
South German Championship:
Berlin state / regional championship:
In addition, as in 1957 and 1958, Berliner SV 1892 , runner-up of the Berlin handball association, who won the third of the Southwest German championship, SG Dietzenbach , in a qualifying game in September 1959 with 10:13, came as the 16th team .
The playing time was 2 × 30 minutes.
Tournament course
Defending champion Hamborn 07 surprisingly had to give up in the first lap. The Hamborner "Löwen" looked like the sure winners against TSV Zuffenhausen in the meantime 9: 4 on their own place, but finally had to admit defeat to the fighting strength of the Swabian champions in an "unpleasant meeting". In the last few minutes the game developed into a “handball scandal” with a chain of free throws and evictions, as the Hamburger Abendblatt headlined; After the game, angry spectators stormed the field and hit the Zuffenhausen players and the referee. Otherwise, the tournament favorites prevailed in the preliminary round with clear victories. In the second round the next surprises followed: the highly rated TC Frisch Auf Göppingen, the indoor champion of this season, lost to the Offenbacher Kickers with 12:10, and the North German champion VfL Wolfsburg, who had knocked out SG Leutershausen in the preliminary round - after all the runner-up from the previous two years - lost to the young team from Lintfort.
The later tournament winner TuS Lintfort had only qualified as third place in the West German Championship, but then showed great consistency in the final tournament with wins against the Berlin champions, the North German champions and the South West German champions. Leverkusen were nevertheless favored in the final, as Bayer 04 had kept TuS Lintfort at a distance in the West German regional championship; And even in the course of the tournament, the strong attacking Leverkusen team left no doubt about their ambitions with clear victories. Lintfort won the final because the game of Leverkusen was too much geared towards attacking the normally outstanding striker Robert Will , who this time was well shielded, as "tactically stupid" the then national coach Werner Vick criticized the play area of the favorite. This also won the Lintforters 'recipe for betting on their own offspring - nine of the new champions' eleven players came from their own youth - against the Bayer-Werksverein, where no member of the final team in Leverkusen had started playing handball.
