The German field handball championship 1949 was played in a final tournament between May 26 and June 26, 1949; The organizer was the German Working Committee for Handball (DAH), the forerunner organization of the German Handball Federation (DHB). The final took place on June 26, 1949 in front of 25,000 spectators in Hamburg .
The qualification for this final tournament ran through the championship tournaments of the four regional associations of West Germany already organized at that time as well as the West Berlin state / regional association; so it was no longer a zone championship .
New German champion in the field handball was the RSV Mülheim , who has the (unofficial) in the spring championship finals in 1949 won in the hall. Mülheim won the final against SV Hamburg Police 7: 6.
mode
The teams played the championship in a simple knockout round . The winning teams of the preliminary round determined the two finalists via a semi-final; no further placement games were carried out.
The following eight clubs qualified for participation in the final round through the regional championships of the four regional associations and the state / regional championship in Berlin:
- SV Hamburg Police (North German Champion)
- THW Kiel (North German runner-up, defending champion)
- RSV Mülheim (West German Champion, German Champion (Halle) 1949 (unofficial))
- TuS 04 Rheinhausen (West German runner-up)
- Sports community Haßloch (Southwest German champion)
- TC Frisch Auf Göppingen (South German Champion)
- 1. FC Nürnberg (South German runner-up)
- Berliner SV 1892 (Berlin Master)
The playing time was 2 × 30 minutes; in the event of a tie after regular playing time, ten minutes of extra time were planned to bring about the decision, and possibly another extra time. If there is a tie after the second extra time in a game, a replay has been scheduled.
Tournament course
In the preliminary round, all four teams from North and West Germany prevailed against the competition from the other regional associations. The subsequent draw resulted in semi-finals between the North German and West German teams, so that there were new editions of the matches at the respective regional championships.
The regionally victorious teams from Hamburg and Mülheim prevailed again, albeit tightly and happily. The SV Police Hamburg was able to keep the game against the defending champion in Kiel open in front of 10,000 spectators, at halftime Kiel was only 5: 4. The Kiel team failed to score in the second section, while the Hamburg team was able to rely on their most dangerous attacker Otto Maychrzak in the crucial last ten minutes , who first scored a field goal and then safely converted a free throw to 5: 6. The Mülheim lawn athletes made it to the finals even happier: Rheinhausen led 4-0 in the first half in front of 15,000 spectators, but could not prevent the Mülheimers from catching up, but their victory, at the end of the second extra time it was still 6: 6 . Only in the replay in front of 20,000 spectators on the following weekend was Mülheim able to win, but again needed two extensions of the regular playing time until the 8: 6 win.
In the final in front of their own audience, the Hamburg police club was able to make the game even up into overtime after goals, but finally had to acknowledge the playful and combative superiority of the Mülheimers at the 6: 7 final score.

- ↑ Note: While in indoor handball the championship tournaments of 1948 and 1949 are not recognized by the DHB and are considered unofficial, the handball umbrella organization in field handball also records the championship rounds held in a unitary association before it was founded in October 1949 (including the DAH championships 1947 –1949) and consequently lists the winners as German champions on his statistics pages from 1934 onwards.
