The German handball championship in 1948 was an indoor handball finals tournament of the strongest clubs in the American-British bizone and the French occupation zone as well as West Berlin . The tournament was carried out as an open championship of the British zone . The tournament was held in Bremen on February 14th and 15th, 1948 ; The organizer was the German Working Committee for Handball (DAH), the forerunner organization of the German Handball Federation (DHB).

Though there had been considerations earlier to hold a championship final in indoor handball as well, it was not until this first interzonal post-war tournament in Bremen that the title of German champion was awarded for the first time , albeit unofficially, as was already recorded at the time.

This championship, like the one at the following indoor handball interzonal tournament in 1949 , was not subsequently recognized by the DHB, which, after its founding in 1949, hosted the finals in the hall and on the field from 1950 onwards. In contrast to field handball , which was more important at the time and for which the umbrella association has recorded the German champions since 1934, the titleholders of the two interzonal tournaments are not included in the DHB statistics.

The first unofficial title holder in the indoor version of the sport was the Berliner SV 1892 , at that time under the name SG Wilmersdorf . The Berliners prevailed in the final against the SV Hamburg police 5-2.

Mode and course of the tournament

The number and names of the participating clubs are not entirely certain, as newspaper reporting in post-war Germany was only just beginning to consolidate again. The mode is also unclear; presumably there was (as in 1949 ) a preliminary round with group games and a final for the winning teams.

It can be considered certain that, in addition to the final opponents SG Wilmersdorf (BSV 1892) in preliminary group A and SV Polizei Hamburg in group B, the following teams also took part: VfB Unity 07 Herford , THW Kiel and SV Darmstadt 98 in group A; Sports community Haßloch , TV Eintracht Hagen and Germania Wilhelmshaven in group B.

A brief note in the Neue Zeit provides information about the course of the tournament : "In Bremen, Wilmersdorf overran its seven competitors [...]."

The playing time was 2 × 15 minutes.
