German handball championship 1959

The German handball championship in 1960 was the eleventh final round of the German championship in indoor handball for men organized by the DHB . It was played on March 5th and 6th in the Killesberghalle in Stuttgart , in a final tournament with a group phase in the preliminary round.

After winning the final against THW Kiel (6: 3), TC Frisch Auf Göppingen was the new German champion for the third time in a row and for the fifth time in total ; the SV Police Hamburg was thus replaced as record champions.

The meanwhile more experienced Göppingeners were at the zenith of their success story in 1960: Within 14 days, Frisch won the South German Championship, this German Championship and finally, as the first German team, the European Cup (since 1993 EHF Champions League ) in the final against the Danish champions Aarhus GF at the Stade Pierre de Coubertin in Paris.

mode

The champions of the five regional associations as well as the runner-up of the host association, this year the South German Handball Association, were eligible to participate in the final round . In two preliminary round groups, the first two teams qualified for the semi-finals, the bottom of each group played for fifth place.

The defending champions TC Frisch Auf Göppingen (regional association champion South), Berliner SV 1892 (regional / regional association champion Berlin) and SV Bayer 04 Leverkusen (regional association champion West) played in the preliminary round group A.

In the other group, THW Kiel (regional association champion north), TSV 1860 Ansbach (vice champion regional association south) and TSG Haßloch (regional association champion south-west) met each other.

The playing time was 2 × 20 minutes.

Tournament course

After the more difficult victories in the preliminary round against Berliner SV and Leverkusen and in the semifinals against Ansbach, Göppingen dominated the North German champions from Kiel in the final at will and won deservedly; the Göppingen played a controlled handball and waited patiently in the attack with long, appropriate ball relays for their chances of a successful goal throw.
