Alex Grant (born January 20, 1989 in Antigonish , Nova Scotia ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Jokerit in the Continental Hockey League since June 2018 .
Career
youth
Alex Grant began playing ice hockey with the local Antigonish Bulldogs in his native Antigonish . In the summer of 2005, he moved to the Saint John Sea Dogs in the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec (LHJMQ) after he was selected in the corresponding LHJMQ Entry Draft 2005 in first place. The defender quickly gained a foothold at the Sea Dogs and already had a record of 12 goals and 20 assists in 68 games in his second season. This was followed by the 2007 NHL Entry Draft , in which he was selected by the Pittsburgh Penguins in 118th position. For the time being, however, he stayed with the Sea Dogs, in which he increased again in the following season 2007/08 and came to 48 scorer points in 70 games; He also reached the play-off semi-finals with the team , but was eliminated there with a sweep against the Huskies de Rouyn-Noranda .
During the 2008/09 season he was transferred (together with a five-round draft pick) from the Sea Dogs to the Shawinigan Cataractes , also playing in the LHJMQ ; In return, the Sea Dogs Danick Gauthier , a first and a second round draft pick. With the Cataractes he reached the final of the Coupe du Président this season , but had to admit defeat to the Drummondville Voltigeurs 3: 4 . He was then old enough to sign an entry level contract with the Penguins and began the season with their farm team , the Wheeling Nailers , in the ECHL . During the season he was also on the ice for the Penguins' AHL farm team, the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins . Also in the 2010/11 season he commuted between AHL and ECHL, where he had to pause a large part of the season due to a wrist injury.
After his injury, he became a key player in the AHL, where he came in 61 missions on 10 goals and 27 assists. The Penguins took this as an opportunity to extend his contract for another year in the summer of 2012.
Constant change
However, there was not a single NHL mission for Grant in the entire 2012/13 season, so the Penguins gave him in June 2013 in exchange for Harry Zolnierczyk to the Anaheim Ducks . He signed a one-year contract with the Ducks and played for the Norfolk Admirals in the AHL. In November, Grant received his first appointment to the NHL squad of the Ducks, which he followed directly with his first NHL goal on his NHL debut on November 30, 2013 against the San Jose Sharks .
In March 2014, he was transferred to the Ottawa Senators in exchange for André Petersson , initially under contract with their farm team, the Binghamton Senators . After he was only used in the AHL until the end of the 2014/15 season, he joined the Arizona Coyotes as a free agent and played there mainly for the Springfield Falcons in the AHL. Also as a free agent, Grant signed a new one-year contract with the Boston Bruins in July 2016 , as well as with the Minnesota Wild the following year .
In the summer of 2018, Grant decided to move to Europe for the first time by signing a contract with the Jokerit in the Continental Hockey League (KHL).
International
At the international level, Grant was on the ice at the World U-17 Hockey Challenges 2005 and 2006 and for Canada's U18 junior team at the U18 World Cup .
