The Württemberg History and Antiquity Association e. V. ( WGAV ) is a German history association . It is one of the oldest historical associations in southwest Germany .

history

The association was founded in 1843 in Stuttgart, the Württemberg antiquity association . In the first decades of its existence, under the protectorate of the king, he devoted himself to the protection of "patriotic monuments of prehistoric times", which were to be preserved from destruction, alienation or disfigurement. He also built up a valuable collection of movable cultural assets, which was expanded through targeted purchases and donations and presented to the public. In addition to archaeological finds from the Alemannic era, paintings, sculptures and manuscripts were shown. Within a short time, the association acquired the character of a state-recognized specialist agency for archaeological and art-historical issues relating to monuments.

With the appointment of a state curator (1858) for the preservation of monuments and the establishment of a "state collection of patriotic art and antiquity monuments " (1862), today's State Museum Württemberg , the association lost its previously undisputed position. In 1872 he handed his collections over to the state.

From then on, researching and conveying the history of the state became his main task, the scientific results of which have been published in the Württemberg quarterly journals since 1878 and in the Zeitschrift für Württembergische Landesgeschichte (ZWLG) since 1937 . In 1900 the association gave itself the more appropriate designation for its range of tasks, "Württembergischer Geschichts- und Altertumsverein".

Act

The association is aimed at both historians and laypeople who want to expand their knowledge of regional history and deepen their understanding of the south-west German cultural landscape. Traditionally, the interests of early history and archeology, the history of rulers and territories, the history of art and architecture, the history of religion and culture in Württemberg and its predecessor territories apply. The focus is also on biographical studies and developments in social and economic history. More and more topics of contemporary history are coming into focus.

Today the association has around 1,250 members. A semi-annual newsletter provides information on the program of events, consisting of lectures, study trips, conferences and courses. In cooperation with the main state archive in Stuttgart , the association offers historical-literary readings and palaeographic exercises that are intended to familiarize people with the reading of handwritten sources.

The association is affiliated with the “Working Group for Regional History in Classes” , which develops materials for historical education in schools.

In the state capital Stuttgart, the Württemberg History and Antiquity Association takes on the task of a local history association. He also runs the business of the Association of Württemberg History and Antiquity Associations, to which 70 historical associations between Lake Constance and Tauber with around 30,000 individual members are affiliated.
