Brian Thomas O'Neill (born June 1, 1988 in Yardley , Pennsylvania ) is an American ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Jokerit in the Continental Hockey League since May 2016 . He was part of Team USA's roster at the 2018 Winter Olympics .

Career

Youth and college

Brian O'Neill played in his youth for the Chicago Steel in the United States Hockey League (USHL), the highest junior league in the United States. In his first and only year there, he promptly got a points average of over 1.0 (61 in 60 games) and was consequently appointed to the USHL All-Rookie Team . The attacker then enrolled at Yale University in autumn 2008 and ran from then on for their ice hockey team, the Yale Bulldogs , in the ECAC Hockey in the NCAA's game operations . As a freshman , he won the ECAC championship with the Bulldogs and was elected to the ECAC All-Rookie Team after 26 scorer points in 33 games . In total, O'Neill spent four years at Yale, steadily increasing his personal stats and having been nominated twice to the ECAC First All-Star Team , while leading the Bulldogs in his senior year as team captain. He also completed his studies with a bachelor's degree in political science .

Professional area

Without being considered in an NHL Entry Draft , O'Neill signed in March 2012 as a free agent an entry contract with the Los Angeles Kings from the National Hockey League (NHL). With their farm team , the Manchester Monarchs , he made his professional debut in the American Hockey League (AHL) at the end of the 2011/12 season and played for the team in the following years, without being considered by the Kings in their NHL line-up to become. His breakthrough in the AHL came in the 2014/15 season, when he led the entire league in templates (58), points (80) and in the plus / minus statistics (+30), with the best scorer being the John B. Sollenberger Trophy received. In addition, he was honored as Most Valuable Player with the Les Cunningham Award and appointed to the AHL All-Star Classic and the AHL Second All-Star Team . Meanwhile, he won the playoffs for the Calder Cup with the Monarchs at the end of the season .

Despite these achievements, the Kings gave the attacker in October 2015 to the New Jersey Devils and should in return receive a seven-round vote for the NHL Entry Draft 2017 , provided the Devils provided O'Neill with a new contract for the following season; this did not happen subsequently. However, this transfer gave him the opportunity to gain first experience in the NHL, so he was part of the New Jersey squad until December 2015 and played 22 games in the highest league in North America during this time. He was then sent back to the AHL to the Albany Devils , where he ended the season and subsequently decided to move to Europe by signing a contract with the Finnish Jokerit from the Continental Hockey League in May 2016 . There he also established himself as a regular scorer and received a new three-year contract in December 2017.

International

O'Neill gained his first international experience at the Germany Cup 2017 , in which he finished fourth and last with the US national team . Nevertheless, just under a month later, it was announced that the attacker had been nominated for Team USA's line-up at the 2018 Winter Olympics . He benefited from the decision of the National Hockey League not to interrupt the season for this Olympiad and thus ban their players from participating. In Pyeongchang, he finally reached seventh place in the US selection.
